Only two things are known for sure about the enigmatic Pyro: he sets things on fire and he doesn't speak. In fact, the only certainty is that he sets things on fire. Some believe his intermittent wheezing may be an attempt to communicate through a filtered mouth connected to lungs deformed by the constant exposure to his asbestos-lined suit. Either way, he's a terrifying, inscrutable, flaming Frankenstein—if he's even human.

Pyro's appearance in TF2 is shrouded in mystery, but he always wears a full firefighting suit, including a helmet and gas mask that conceals his face, leaving only his eyes visible. The suit also has attached napalm grenades, hinting at his destructive tendencies. He stands 175 cm tall, making him one of the shortest characters, but his true identity and appearance beneath his mask remain a mystery, though many fans believe he is male and his perception of the world is warped by pyromania.

Pyros are a class of pyromaniacs of indeterminate origin, possessing a hushed voice and a burning passion for all things fire-related. As shown in the episode "Meet the Pyros," Pyros can suffer from delusions, imagining themselves in a utopian fantasy world known as Pyroland. Pyro specializes in close-quarters combat with enemies, using a homemade flamethrower. Ignited enemies suffer a residual burning effect and additional damage over time, allowing Pyro to excel at surprise attacks and escapes. Due to the flamethrower's short range, Pyro is weaker at longer ranges and relies heavily on ambushes and flanking maneuvers to catch enemies off guard.
