In the year 2000, a global cataclysm known as the Second Impact devastated Antarctica, raising sea levels and causing climate disasters, wars, and the deaths of half the world's population. Officially, it was said to have been caused by a meteorite, but it was actually the result of an experiment involving an ancient being called Adam.

Following the Second Impact, humanity slowly reorganizes. To protect itself from future threats, the secret organization NERV is created, operating under the command of the UN, although it is actually controlled by a hidden group called SEELE.

In the year 2015, giant creatures called Angels begin to appear. These beings seek to reach the secret core of NERV's Tokyo-3 base, where Lilith, a primordial entity, resides. If an Angel fuses with Lilith, it would trigger a new cataclysm: the Third Impact, which would end humanity as we know it.

To prevent this, NERV develops EVAs, giant humanoid mechas created from Adam or Lilith. Only certain adolescents, the Chosen Children, can synchronize with them and pilot them. The war against the Angels is only part of a much deeper conspiracy about the origin of humanity and its ultimate destiny.

NERV is a secret paramilitary organization tasked with defending humanity from the Angels in Neon Genesis Evangelion. Located in Tokyo-3, NERV operates the Evangelion units, gigantic biological mecha controlled by teenage pilots. Its official mission is to protect humanity using advanced technology to combat these threats. However, behind its facade, NERV is controlled by SEELE, a hidden group seeking to carry out the Human Complementation Project, a plan to unite all human souls into a single collective being and thus achieve a new form of existence. NERV's commander, Gendō Ikari, has his own personal goals related to his deceased wife, Yui. NERV's main base is located in the GeoFront, a massive underground space beneath Tokyo-3, which also houses vital secrets, such as the Lilith organism. NERV combines advanced science, genetic manipulation, and military technology to fulfill its goals.

EVAs (Evangelion Units) are massive biomechanical mechs designed to combat the Angels in Neon Genesis Evangelion. Each unit combines robotic components with organic tissue: their "skeleton" and armament are the product of advanced mechanical engineering, while their muscles, skin, and internal systems are derived from biological material—often directly from the First Ancestors, Adam or Lilith.

To activate them, a human pilot dives into a cockpit (Entry Plug) filled with LCL fluid, synchronizing their mind with the EVA through a neurolink device. The synchronization rate determines the degree of control and combat effectiveness: the greater the synchronization, the more fluid and powerful the link, but also the greater the psychological risk for the pilot.

Although initially presented as simple weapons, EVAs hold fundamental secrets: they possess the wills of their own, can regenerate, and, ultimately, are intended to serve the Human Complementation Project. Their function transcends defense against the Angels; they reflect the desire to merge the human soul with primal beings to take a new evolutionary step.

SEELE is a committee of eleven elders who operate in the shadows as the true power behind NERV and the UN. Its origins date back to the post-Second Impact era, when leaders of various nations agreed to create an organization to guide the destiny of humanity.

Their ultimate goal is to launch the Human (or Instrumental) Complementation Project, a plan to force the collective "evolution" of human beings: to merge all individual souls into a single superconscious entity, thus eliminating the barriers of loneliness and pain. To achieve this, they manipulate NERV, fund the creation of EVAs, and use information obtained from Adam and Lilith.

Although SEELE officially oversees Anti-Angel operations under the guise of protecting humanity, in reality it sacrifices lives and morals to achieve its goal. Its members never appear on stage without their black suits and masks with a luminous eye, symbolizing their absolute anonymity and absolute control over the threads of human destiny.

Origin and purpose

Unlike NERV's Evas (00, 01, 02), these units were not created to fight Angels, but to carry out the Human Instrumentality Project according to SEELE's plan. They are, in essence, ritual tools rather than conventional weapons.

SEELE sought to eliminate dependence on human pilots and NERV control, creating fully autonomous Evas, obedient only to their will.

Technical specifications

S² Motor: Each unit has an integrated S² motor, giving them unlimited power. They no longer depend on an umbilical cable or limited operating time.

Dummy Plug System: Instead of a human pilot, they operate with a Dummy Plug based on Kaworu Nagisa, allowing them to act without their own will.

Extreme regeneration: They can regenerate rapidly, even after fatal damage, making them almost impossible to destroy permanently.

Appearance

Uniform white color, which makes them appear cold and "pure", in contrast to their actual function.

Physical appearance: Asuka is a teenage girl of average height, with long, orange-red hair that she usually wears loose or in pigtails. She has intense blue eyes and an expressive face that reflects her strong temperament. Her skin is fair, and her presence is often very striking. She wears the German school uniform in some scenes and her red plug suit when piloting.

Personality: Asuka is outgoing, proud, and self-confident. She comes across as dominant, competitive, and arrogant, especially around Shinji and other pilots. However, behind that confident facade lies a deep insecurity and fear of abandonment. She has a strong desire to be recognized and hidden fears about her own worth. Her explosive and temperamental nature often leads to conflict, but she is also passionate and determined.

Personality: Ritsuko is intelligent, rational, and methodical. She has a reserved and controlled personality, always focused on her professional life. She hides her emotions behind a cold, logical facade, but internally she struggles with deep conflicts. Her relationships with her mother, Naoko, and with Gendō Ikari are central sources of her emotional trauma. Although she appears unflappable, she is constantly torn between her duty, her repressed feelings, and her desire to be recognized and valued.

What is EVA-00?

Evangelion Unit 00 is the first functional Evangelion and operational prototype developed by the organization NERV (originally by GEHIRN) as part of the efforts to combat the Angels. It differs in design and purpose from subsequent units because it was built as a testbed and not as a fully refined combat machine.

Appearance and design

Giant humanoid: like all Evangelions, it has a humanoid shape, with legs, arms and torso, designed to be piloted from within.

Original colors: In its first appearance, its armor was yellow-orange with white touches, reflecting its prototype nature.

Mono-eye: its head incorporates a single central red “eye”, unlike later units which have two more human-like eyes.

Helmet and visors: its head design looks as if it were wearing a kind of helmet with a visor, with geometric shapes, and in some conceptual versions it appears with additional crystals or sensors.

Without typical shoulders: at first it does not have the large "pylons" on the shoulders where other units store weapons; this makes it look less equipped for direct combat.

Evolution and improvements

The unit was initially not very effective in battle and was far from stable. After sustaining severe damage, especially during the fight with the Angel Ramiel, it was repaired and upgraded. Following this, its armor was changed to blue and white, and additional devices such as retro-rockets and weapon compartments (including the progressive knife) were added.

Special feature: instability

Unlike the other units, EVA-00 is notoriously unstable and prone to entering "berserk" mode (a self-activating combat state without human control) even during synchronization tests. This instability was observed with Rei as well as with other pilots during testing.

Outside of her NERV uniform, she dresses comfortably and modernly (T-shirts, cropped jackets, jeans), while on operations, she wears her official command uniform, complete with a distinctive red jacket.

Personality: In her personal life, she is outgoing, friendly, and somewhat disorganized; she enjoys fast food, drinks (especially beer), and retro video games. Beneath that carefree facade, she hides a deep trauma from her father's death in Second Impact and a great responsibility to the safety of humanity. At work, she is determined, brave, and capable of making difficult decisions under pressure.
