Finally, weakened by hunger and thirst, as well as the toxic air of the Upside Down, he collapsed in Byers Castle in the Upside Down. The test subject, Eleven, managed to find him there after entering a deeper psychic state, where they communicated briefly. Will told Eleven to hurry, as he was only getting weaker and more vulnerable.[3]

As Will sang one of his favorite songs, the Monster found him, destroying his wooden fortress. Will was taken to the Hawkins Public Library and entangled in a strange biological web that was prevalent throughout the building, unconscious and with only corpses and skeletons for company. Joyce Byers and Jim Hopper entered the Upside Down through the Gate to search for Will. They eventually found him entangled in the web, hooked onto some kind of tendril that extended down his throat and into his stomach; Hopper pulled it out before it killed him. Joyce and Hopper managed to revive Will and return safely to their home dimension, where Will was immediately hospitalized. There, Jonathan, Mike, Lucas, Dustin, and Nancy Wheeler visited him at the local Hawkins hospital.

A month later, the boys conducted a Dungeons & Dragons Christmas Eve campaign, encountering the dreaded Thessalhydra, but this time, Will's character triumphed over the enemy. Jonathan picked Will up from the Wheelers' house and drove him home. At dinner, Will excused himself to wash his hands. This wasn't his true intention: in the bathroom, he vomited a creature into the sink. Before Will left the bathroom and returned to dinner, he momentarily saw the Upside Down flicker around him.

Will is the son of Joyce Byers and Lonnie Byers and the younger brother of Jonathan Byers. Will was closer to his mother and brother than to his father. Because of this, Jonathan became a much bigger role model for him than his father. Joyce and Lonnie divorced, causing Lonnie to move out. Joyce, Jonathan, and Will remained in their home in Hawkins, Indiana.

Will has been best friends with Lucas Sinclair and Mike Wheeler since they were young. In fourth grade, Dustin Henderson arrived at their school and joined their group of friends. While riding his bike in Mirkwood, a humanoid monster crossed Will's path. Will panicked; he ran off the road and fell to the ground. He ran home looking for his family, but no one was home. He ran to the shed and loaded a rifle for protection, but was stunned when the monster appeared behind him. A lightbulb shines brightly above him before Will disappears into an alternate dimension.

In the Upside Down, Will evaded the Monster for a week, displaying his remarkable resourcefulness, ability to hide, and creativity. Somehow, Will discovered that his presence in the Upside Down could affect the electrical appliances in his home dimension, and he began trying to contact his mother.
