races

Fantasy races are typically based on myths and folklore. Some authors describe races as descended from humans, others from a common ancestor, others declare them to be aliens from other worlds, and still others write of their creation by the gods. In some works, races may also include mythical creatures such as angels, dragons, centaurs, minotaurs, ents, and others, although their characteristics, intelligence levels, and social structure are ambiguous. Hybrid races, such as half-elves and half-orcs, also appear. Culture Each race has its own unique characteristics and abilities. For example: Types Some popular races in fantasy: People; elves (dark elves); fairies; dwarves (gnomes); halflings; orcs, goblins, ogres, trolls; werewolves; intelligent undead (vampires, liches); demons.

People

People The standard human race occupies a central place in almost all the books. The authors incorporate all real-life human races or their equivalents into their worlds.

Humans are often the only or primary intelligent species in a setting. They typically live at the material and technological level of the Middle Ages or the 19th century, or less commonly, the ancient world. In classic fantasy, the human race corresponds to European culture. However, today, works with an Asian cultural basis—Japanese, Korean, and Chinese fantasy—are increasingly common.

In classic black-and-white worlds, humans typically represent the forces of good, opposing inhuman threats. In more complex narratives, they can occupy any number of conflicting positions. Relationships with other races also vary greatly: humans can cooperate, fight, be subservient, or act as fanatical racists.

elves

Elves This unified race has become almost synonymous with the very concept of "fantasy": elves appear in most classic works of the genre. Authors often describe elves as a kind of enhanced version of humans. They are strikingly beautiful, live very long lives, and possess iron health. The typical elf is tall, slender, often blond, and has a classically ideal beauty. Physically, they are stronger, more agile, and more resilient than humans, despite appearing frail.

This fantasy race is traditionally cast as an ancient cultural civilization that, at the time of the story, is experiencing hard times. This often makes fantasy elves conservative, decadent, and snobby. They typically wield powerful magic, though almost always limited in its use. In the story, these people are usually portrayed as champions of good, positive characters, often serving as "deus ex machina." However, they can be misguided, and therefore almost never overcome evil on their own.

vampire

A vampire (Old Slavic: вѫпырь, Polish: wąpierz) is, in the lower mythology of the peoples of Europe, a living, half-dead, or dead person, leading a nocturnal lifestyle, sucking people's blood, and causing nightmares. It is believed that vampires were "unclean" dead people—criminals, suicides, those who died prematurely, or those infected by the bites of other vampires.

Appearance It all depends on the species—for example, a ghoul looks completely like a corpse, while a classic vampire can be completely indistinguishable from a human. They can be distinguished by their long, needle-like fangs, red eyes, and grayish skin.

Properties Vampires possess a wealth of magical abilities. The longer they live, the stronger their magic becomes, amplified by the blood they've consumed. Their physical strength, speed, and agility are far greater than they were in life, and they continually grow; a seasoned bloodsucker can easily uproot a small tree or outrun a bird. Vampires can also retract their fangs, making them more difficult to identify. They also possess seduction powers.

siren

In ancient Greek mythology, sirens were hybrid creatures whose upper bodies were feminine and their lower bodies avian. They personified the enchanting yet treacherous surface of the sea, beneath which lay jagged cliffs and shallows.

Sirens are renowned for their wondrous voices. Hearing their sweet song, passing sailors would completely lose their composure, rushing toward the wondrous sounds and smashing their ships onto the rocks.

mermaids

Mermaids are more recent figures in European legends and superstitions. They are described as girls with the lower half of their bodies like fish, but mermaids with human bodies are also found.

In the Middle Ages, mermaids were depicted with a comb or a mirror (less often, holding a fish)—their passion for grooming served as a metaphor for sin. In Russian literature, the mermaids from Ukrainian and Belarusian folklore left the most noticeable mark. They are not chimeras, but people—girls who died "unjust deaths": suicides, those who died without repentance, sorceresses. They can draw people into the water, but they do not sing or seduce men.

werewolf

Werewolfs (also known as "werewolf" or "werewolf") are people who transform into animals after the full moon rises.

Werewolves differ from real animals: they are usually much larger and have a number of distinctive features.

Types of werewolves Although legends about werewolves exist in mundane culture, the concept of them in various countries is most often limited to the dual form of "man-wolf." This is not true.

Wolf-like transformations are common in Western and Northern Europe, but in other parts of the world, transformations into other animals may be more common. In Russia, wolf-like transformations are common:

Volkov; Bears; Foxes; Lynxes. In addition to the animal into which they are transformed, werewolves differ in origin: there are true werewolves and converted werewolves.

True werewolves are werewolves born to both werewolf parents.

light elves

Light, High, Sun, or High Elves A distinct subrace whose refinement and sophistication outweigh their harmony with nature and ability to survive. They are often the oldest surviving civilization. Power, immortality, and advanced technology could make this subrace invincible, but authors often introduce obstacles that prevent them from achieving perfection and conquering the world. For example, their state declines because it has failed to recover from a long-ago catastrophe. Or comfort and luxury lead to decadent hedonism, where the elves become mired in indifference to the outside world, internal intrigue, or dangerous magical experiments.

Dark elves

Dark, Twilight, or Low Elves This subrace is presented as a dark reflection of their higher-ranking counterparts. Authors often take characteristic elven traits and twist them. For example, pride is transformed into chauvinism, and courage into cruelty. Two main templates of dark elves have emerged in the genre. One type is similar in appearance to the light elves, lives above ground, is ruled by traditional monarchs, and relies on sheer force in their plots. The other template features short, dark-skinned creatures from dungeons or caves, often living in theocracies and active practitioners of black magic and poison.

gnomes

Dwarves and other short races They appear as short, stocky, bearded blacksmiths or even tiny creatures in brightly colored clothing. The fantasy race is divided into two distinct types. Representatives of one are hardworking, but enjoy taking breaks for drinking, fighting, and singing. The other, by contrast, embodies seriousness, an almost puritanical severity, and an unwavering commitment to ancient traditions. Regardless of their type, dwarves exhibit an obsession with honor and vengeance that often transcends the bounds of reason.

dwarves

Dwarves, also known as dwarves This subrace is easily recognized by their short stature, powerful, muscular build, and, of course, thick beards. They make their homes deep underground, mining minerals, smelting metals, and forging ingenious mechanisms. Dwarves often feud with goblins, dragons, and other dark denizens of the deep. They are stubborn, proud, straightforward, and often dislike elves.

halflings

Halflings Halflings, or hobbits, have become a good-natured caricature of English villagers with their love of comfort, and they also embody minor folkloric spirits, such as brownies. Halflings tend to stay away from the world's great upheavals, preferring a measured and prosperous life. Their closeness to nature makes them excellent farmers and hunters, while their innate common sense and lack of ambition serve as protection from the temptations and dangers of the magical world. Goblins, orcs, trolls, and goblin-like tribes The standard race from Western European myths appears to readers as ugly, evil dwarves or, conversely, half-giants. They often hide in caves and labyrinths, avoiding sunlight. Certain races of goblins often appear as aggressive barbarians who attack more civilized peoples. They have a particular dislike for elves and dwarves, constantly warring with them. In books, they are often portrayed as a numerous threat that relies on numbers rather than individual prowess.

beast-men

Half-humans, half-animals Beastmen are descendants of ancient mythological figures such as satyrs and centaurs. They typically play the role of semi-wild, small races that provide the atmosphere and backdrop for the world. Their magical abilities are often limited to natural enchantments. Here is a list of the most common races:

Cat people vary widely, from slightly humanized cats to people with cat ears and tails. They range from small domesticated pets to large felines. They are often cunning, treacherous, and even cruel creatures, sometimes depicted as bearers of knowledge and nobility.

Ratmen typically occupy the same thematic niche as goblins: low-level opponents for heroes. Their image is often associated with disease, filth, and dungeons.

The Bird People are represented as both flying man-eating monsters and wise noble peoples.

Fishmen and bullymen are mostly based on the "sea peoples" of European epic poetry. They can be more or less positive or neutral characters, or sinister outsiders whose goals and morals are incomprehensible to land dwellers.

Minotaurs are bull-headed warriors, huge, strong, and sometimes not particularly intelligent creatures. In some settings, they dwell in remote places, attacking travelers or serving dark lords. In other settings, minotaurs are a civilized race with their own

Centaurs are a standard race with a human torso on a horse's body. They are sometimes depicted as a nomadic people, wild and free. In other cases, they are credited with special ancient wisdom. They can be both loyal allies of the protagonists and fierce enemies.

Satyrs and fauns are humanoids whose appearance combines human and bovine features: distinctive ears, horns, tails, and hooves. They are traditionally associated with wild nature, and their roles can range from elven companions to demonic minions.

dragons

Dragons are usually a distinct race of solitary individuals. They are as intelligent as other peoples, but they don't seek to integrate into other civilizations. Sometimes they act as dragon gods. Sometimes authors depict this standard race as ordinary fire-breathing snakes or lizards, lacking intelligence and not considered a fully-fledged race.

Serpent people are often wise creatures, well-versed in magic. They are considered cunning and generally do not get along well with other species.

Draconids are a subrace of humanoid reptilians who clearly resemble dragons (hence the race's name). They are often elite warriors of the dark forces.

Dragons, snake people, draconians Intelligent snakes and lizards often represent ancient cultures that once flourished but fell into decline. Here is a list of the most common races:

light perfume

Light spirits Gods of varying ranks, angels, and other bright spirits appear as messengers, protectors, and warriors of the higher forces of good. They often appear in a classic, majestic form—beautiful yet formidable humanoids with shining wings, halos, and light. However, subraces can also assume less obvious forms: from the appearance of ordinary mortals, allowing them to operate unnoticed among humans, to more exotic incarnations, such as mighty dragons.

demons

Demons Demons and devils represent a dark reflection of the forces of light, serving as messengers, warriors, and servants of the higher beings of evil. The appearance of individual races varies greatly, from classic horned and hoofed creatures to surreal abominations. Fallen angels with blackened halos and wings, as well as snake-like or dragon-like forms, are no less common. Many are capable of changing their appearance to human form for undetected actions. The traditional role of demons as dark spirits, responding to the calls of warlocks, also remains.

natural perfumes

Nature spirits This is a group of fantasy races closely tied to the environment. Their nature rarely has a clear definition of good or evil; rather, they embody the energy of nature, which transcends ethics. Among them are guardian spirits of the place, such as brownies, water spirits, and wood spirits. Others are closely associated with elements of the natural landscape: nymphs, dryads, animal and plant spirits. They can have humanoid forms, or even zoomorphic or phytomorphic appearances. In some works, they are important regulators of natural processes, without which the universe gradually collapses.
