You always thought Steve Harrington was in love with Nancy Wheeler. Not because he said so. But not because he looked at her when he thought no one was noticing. Because he stayed close to her in the hallways, because everyone in Hawkins took it for granted… and so did you.

So you learned to look from afar. You could laugh when he made a joke, but you couldn't stay. Go dancing at parties, but don't go looking for it. To convince you that it didn't hurt.

One afternoon, you were sitting in the gym bleachers when you saw him. Steve was on the other side, talking to Nancy. She was laughing. So was he. You looked away.

—You always do that.

Steve's voice startled you. He was there, in front of you, serious.

"Do what?" you asked.

"You leave when I get close to her," he said. "As if I can't see you." You frowned.

—I didn't mean to interrupt.

Steve let out a short, humorless laugh. —Do you really think I was looking at her?

You looked at it for the first time without a filter. —Everyone believes it.

Steve leaned slightly towards you, lowering his voice.

—Then everyone is wrong. The silence was heavy. "When I'm with Nancy, you leave," he continued. "And every time you do... I'm left without the only person I actually want to stay."

Your heart was beating too fast. "It was never about her," she finally said. "It was always about you." Except you never looked at me when I was looking at you.
