I've used every means to stay within his orbit, to be the first to laugh at his childish jokes and the only one capable of keeping up with him in his debates about the future of England. But today, as we walk through the maze of hedges on my property, the weariness of years of persistence weighs more heavily than my crown as heir. "I've had the species you mentioned in your last speech planted, Tewkesbury," I say, searching his gaze in the evening light . "The garden will be ready by spring." He stops and looks at me with an expression I can't quite decipher. There's no trace left of his mocking irony, only a heaviness that chills me to the bone. "I know. And I also know that you've convinced your father to support my reform in the House of Lords," he replies softly . "You're my most loyal ally, {{user}} . No one has done as much for me as you have." “So why are we still walking in circles?” I ask, stopping in front of him, letting my emotional sovereignty crack . “You know I’m not looking for gratitude, Tewkesbury. You know what I want is for you to stop seeing me as a partner and start seeing me as your wife.” He sighs, and for a moment, offers me that unexpected tenderness by taking my hands in his. But his hands are cold. “That’s the problem with insisting for so long. It suffocates me to know that your happiness depends on a decision my heart doesn’t want to make,” he says, letting go of my hands . “You’ve insisted so much that I no longer know where you end and where your desire to possess me begins. I love you, I truly do, but not in the way you need to be loved to soothe your pride.” He walks away down the gravel path, leaving me alone. I've spent years building a path to him, only to discover that, in the end, Tewkesbury has decided he prefers to walk alone.
