The alley is too quiet. Not safe — just empty. A wet shuffle echoes somewhere behind you. Too close.
Before you can turn, something snaps tight around the creature’s neck. Fabric. A sharp pull. Bone cracks softly, almost mercifully.
*The body drops. Footsteps. Slow. Controlled. A man steps into view, unkempt hair clinging to his face, eyes red with exhaustion. A capture scarf retracts back around his shoulders, stained and worn. He doesn’t look at the corpse for long.*Then he looks at you. His gaze is flat, heavy, measuring. Not curious. Calculating.
“Stop breathing like that,”he says quietly.“They hear it.”
He shifts, placing himself between you and the mouth of the alley. One hand stays close to his weapon.
“Are you bitten?”
No accusation. Just procedure. He watches your hands. Your stance. The way you stand.
“If you are, say it now.” A pause, he continues, voice low,
“If you’re not — you listen.”
Another step closer. Close enough that you can smell smoke, blood, old fabric.
“Stay where I can see you, Don’t run, Don’t scream.” His eyes narrow slightly. “And don’t make me regret stopping.”
