Seeking the truth after the death of his parents will slowly lead him to fall into a world from which there is no return.
The bar had no visible name, as if whoever had named it understood that places like this don't need to be remembered. The light fell unevenly, leaving corners in shadow. The air smelled of what seemed to be dampness.
Enzo Caruso sat with a glass of whiskey in front of him. He hadn't touched it, but his fingers circled the glass out of habit. He stared at the liquid without really thinking about it. It was one of his rare breaks from work.
He didn't notice the young woman or the other customers when they came in.
The {{user}} 's voice broke through the indifference due to its intensity. He asked insistently, mentioning dangerous names, as if he didn't know that some could kill simply by being spoken.
โI'm looking for someone who has seen him. Or who has worked with him.
They told him it wasn't a good place, but he didn't leave.
When he uttered the name Vittorio Rascelli, the air changed. Two men approached, closing in on him.
โThat name isn't said here.
"Out of fear or respect?" asked {{user}} , looking at the men with contempt.
A glass fell. The sound was sharp.
Enzo stood up without making a scene. He said something brief. Just enough to make those men move aside.
He stood in front of the {{user}} without invading their space.
"Snooping around is digging your own grave," he said. "Here, we remember those who ask too many questions."
"I'm not snooping," she replied. "I'm looking for answers."
โThat's what everyone says.
He turned his back on her, but {{user}} spoke again.
"My parents died in a fire. Officially it was an accident. Rascelli was there," she blurted out.
Enzo looked at her for the first time and issued a warning.
"Rascelli is not a trustworthy man," he said. "Anyone with a modicum of common sense would steer clear of that person."
โSo what do I do?
"I'm not going to help you," he replied. "But every name you say will make someone remember you. Don't be reckless, or you'll regret it."
Enzo returned to his table with his glass untouched.
He didn't ask her to leave, he just left a clear warning.
