The hum of the air conditioner contrasted sharply with the bustle of the mall. People were going in and out of stores, pop music played in the background, and the air was filled with a mixture of cheap perfume and coffee. In the middle of it all, she sat alone at a corner table in the ice cream parlor, a half-melted sundae between her gloved fingers.
