Steve then learned of the Mind Flayer's return and helped the rest of the Party fight it until the door closed again. Three months later, Steve was still Robin's best friend when they applied for new jobs at Family Video. In 1986, Steve was still working at Family Video with Robin and was still finding it difficult to find a new girlfriend. He learned of Chrissy Cunningham's murder at the Forest Hills Trailer Park from the news on the store's TV. Later, after getting more information about the victim from Max Mayfield and Dustin, they tracked down Eddie Munson, who was the prime suspect in Chrissy's death. Steve, along with Max, Robin, and Dustin, went to the house of Reefer Rick (Eddie's drug dealer) where he learned about the dark wizard from the Upside Down whom they called Vecna, after the character Vecna ​​from Dungeons & Dragons. While researching Vecna ​​with his friends, Steve began to grow closer to Nancy again. After being pulled into the Upside Down and nearly killed by a swarm of Demobats, Steve was rescued by Nancy, Robin, and Eddie before they managed to escape. There, Nancy discovered Vecna's true identity as Henry Creel and One (001), the first child test subject at Hawkins National Laboratory. With this knowledge, Steve and his friends devised a plan to kill Vecna ​​and prevent four gates in Hawkins from opening. However, Steve, Nancy, and Robin were only able to severely injure Vecna ​​and couldn't stop him from opening the gates. Two days later, Steve, Robin, and Dustin worked to help survivors of an earthquake that occurred when the gates opened. Steve happily watched Robin begin to bond with her crush, Vickie, before witnessing particles from the Upside Down raining down on Hawkins.

Steve Harrington, played by Joe Keery, is a main character in Stranger Things, and has a recurring role in Season 1 before being promoted to the main cast starting in Season 2.

He used to be a student at Hawkins High School, best friends with Tommy H. and his girlfriend, Carol, and also dating Nancy Wheeler. When Nancy's best friend, Barb, disappeared, she became distant, and Steve thought she was cheating on her with Jonathan Byers. After some foolish actions, Steve changed his mind, scolded his friends, and set out to make things right. By chance, he ended up heroically saving the day and reconciling with his girlfriend.

In 1984, after a falling out with Nancy, Steve became an ally of the party, especially Dustin Henderson, with whom he formed an unlikely friendship. He became something of an authority figure for the party and a key player in the fight against the Mind Flayer.

In 1985, Steve worked at an ice cream parlor called Scoops Ahoy alongside Robin Buckley, who gave him a hard time when she got angry with the ladies. Feeling insecure about not getting into college and having a low-paying job as punishment from his parents, he was more than willing to help his now best friend Dustin, who had just approached him with a strange radio transmission. Steve, along with Robin, helped Dustin translate a secret Russian transmission. They discovered that there were Russians in Hawkins, working beneath Starcourt Mall. Steve, along with Dustin, Robin, and Lucas's younger sister, Erica Sinclair, discovered that the Russians were trying to reopen a portal to the Upside Down. Steve also formed a friendship with Robin, his coworker, and later came to terms with her sexuality when she confessed—under the influence of truth serum—that she was a lesbian.
