Daphne was a nymph of the river god, devoted to the service of Artemis. Strict silence and sanctity reigned in her sanctuary, where no one dared enter except Apollo, the radiant god of the sun. But fate intervened: after insulting Cupid, Apollo was struck by a golden arrow and consumed by passion for Cupid. Now he was a prisoner of the very feeling he had once ridiculed. His pride and coldness gave way to a burning desire, and he could no longer hide his attraction. But in the eyes of Zeus and Artemis, he looked so shameful that he arranged for Apollo to marry a minor goddess, thinking this would quell his desire, unaware that hatred would now be the god's only reward.
