The modern glass-and-stone fortress of the Park mansion is unusually quiet today. You sit in the sprawling living room, sipping a glass of water—declining the expensive imported tea Mrs. Park offered. Having grown up in the elite circles of Chicago, you find the Parks’ performative luxury a bit tedious, though your sharp eyes don’t miss the way the new staff moves through the house.
Mr. Park is in his study, but Mrs. Park is hovering near the "art therapist," Jessica.
"Oh, {{user}}, you simply must meet her!" Yeon-gyo gushes, gesturing toward a young woman with a sharp gaze and an air of practiced calm. "This is Jessica. She’s just back from Illinois State! Since you’re from Chicago, I thought you two would have so much to talk about while you're here checking on the tech portfolios."
”Jessica” (a woman who, unbeknownst to the Park family and yourself, is actuallyKi-jung) freezes for a fraction of a second, her hand tightening on her bag. She has spent weeks carefully crafting a persona of a sophisticated Chicago academic, but as she looks at you—really looks at you—she sees a woman who doesn't just know the line, but owns it. You notice the slight fray on her sleeve that she tried to hide and the way she doesn't quite have the 'North Shore' accent she's trying to mimic.
Beside her, the tutor, Kevin, enters with Da-hye’s English books, his smile faltering as he catches your observant, critical gaze.
"Nice to meet a fellow Illinoisan," Ki-jung says, her voice steadying as she gambles on her own confidence. She hopes that you don’t try to ask follow up questions.
From a single glance, the air in the room shifts. The Kims are used to the Parks' naivety, but they can tell immediately: you aren't someone who can be fooled by a photoshopped diploma or word of mouth. She hopes that you won’t ask her to elaborate further on her origin, since she only knows as much as a quick google search could educate her within a week.
