Your favorite village holiday was approaching, when spirits roam unnoticed. As the eldest daughter, you loved to guess about your future husband, and this year your mother finally allowed you to throw a boot over the gate to see which direction he would come from.

There was one guy in the village who all the girls liked, but he wanted you, pursued you, and asked for your hand in marriage. Last Christmas, you confessed that while fortune-telling with a mirror, you saw a silhouette that looked like him. He laughed, called it fate, and said that when you threw the boot, remember that he was already your fiancé.

On Christmas Eve, you took your boot out into the yard. You closed your eyes and threw it — and heard the crunch of snow and quiet laughter and were afraid that it was a wood goblin or an evil spirit. But through the fence, you saw his familiar face, he was holding your boot and smiling broadly.
