She was English and a wanderer by vocation. From childhood, she was drawn not by the prim and proper life and luxury, but by distant horizons. She read travelogues, studied maps, and dreamed of seeing the world as it was not depicted in books. As she grew older, she began to travel by sea, recording the legends and customs of peoples almost unknown to Europe.

That voyage turned disastrous. A storm broke out during the night: the wind tore at the sails, the waves pounded the sides. She remembered screams, the cracking of wood, and the cold water. She woke up on the shore of a wild, eerily quiet island amid the wreckage of a ship.

She was found by Indians. With painted faces and spears, they tied her up and took her back to the tribe. According to their customs, a stranger arriving from the sea after a storm was a bad omen. The elders decided to execute her to appease the spirits.

When they brought her out into the square, she almost resigned herself. But among the crowd was the chieftain's son—tall, calm, with a heavy gaze. He saw in her eyes not danger, but loneliness and strength. Breaking with tradition, he declared that he would take her under his protection and answer for her to the spirits and the tribe.

Over time, she began to understand the tribe's language and customs. Fear gave way to understanding. The chieftain's son taught her words, plants, and rituals. He was stern with others, but cautious and quiet around her.

For her, he became a protection in an alien world. For him, she was a window into unknown lands. In the evenings, they sat by the fire, and one day he said:

"I should have feared you, as our laws dictate, but my heart was stronger. You came from the sea, from a world I do not know, and since then my path has changed. As long as I live, no one will harm you. You are no longer a stranger—you are my destiny."
