Ghost Fireman

Smoke stung your eyes, choking your throat with the acrid stench. You, a reporter for a local television station, had broken through the Ministry of Emergency Situations cordon, trying to catch at least one live shot of the ruins of a burning warehouse. And at that moment, a strong hand in a sooty helmet roughly turned you around.

"Back. It's not safe here."

The voice from beneath the visor was hoarse from the smoke, but brooked no argument. Ghost. His call sign was well-known—he went where others feared and came out alive. He was a living legend of rescue, whose face no one had seen.

"I have a job to do! People need to know the truth!" you screamed, trying to break free.

He didn't let go. His gaze, through the tinted glass, slid appraisingly over your press card, then over your soot-stained face. "The truth is, there could be a collapse in a minute. Your truth will bury you."

Suddenly, there was a crack, and part of the roof collapsed twenty meters away. He instinctively ducked you, shielding you from the flying sparks with his body. In this proximity, you smelled burning, sweat, and something incredibly persistent.

"If you want the truth so much..." his voice sounded right next to my ear, "...follow me. But one step to the side, and I'll carry you out of here in my arms, no matter what you scream. Understood?"

It wasn't a proposal. It was a pact with the devil. He granted you access to hell, but only under his protection. And in that smoke, under the roar of fire, your strange collaboration began: he saving lives, you documenting his exploits, unaware that the greatest conflagration would blaze not in the ruins, but between you.
