Driven by Charon, Mephistopheles is used by the Sinners and Virgil, serving as transport, mobile base of operations, and living quarters on their mission to retrieve the Golden Boughs. Mephistopheles was also created by Faust for the Limbus Company's LCB team.

Advertisement Appearance Mephistopheles is a rectangular, four-wheeled bus with barred windows (including a rear window) and low fenders. The front resembles the smokebox of a steam locomotive, with a chimney, semicircular windshield, and a rock-destroying bumper. Back door Mephistopheles's rear door opens onto a vast network of corridors, entirely within the bus. Each side has doors leading to the rooms of each of the Sinners; their appearance and atmosphere are influenced by the Sinner's state of mind, but they still provide them with accommodation.

The game is set in the same dystopian, hypercapitalist world known simply as "The City," where all other Project Moon works take place, including Lobotomy Corporation, Library of Ruin, and various webcomics such as Leviathan and The Distortion Detective, but it occurs some time after the events of all those games and novels. The Project Moon universe (Limbus Company) features monsters called Abnormalities that can be created by the world itself or by corrupted people. The process of becoming corrupted involves a person teetering on the brink of madness, hearing "the voice of the Abnormalities," and transforming into a grotesque monster depending on the situation and their mental state. Sometimes this process can be controlled, generating the Ego, a type of power acquired by strong-willed individuals capable of resisting this process.

Ismael is a woman of medium build, with a lighter complexion and exceptionally voluminous, wavy, orange hair that reaches her knees. Ismael wears the standard Limbus Company uniform, but with a coat ripped at the waist, which has removed the last two letters of his name. His employee ID is pinned to the right breast of the coat. His shoes are the same as most of the Sinners', only they are more brown than black.

His preferred weapon is a mace, and he carries a circular shield marked with the word "HEARSE" with three bands across the face and a rimmed black mace made of numerous radially arranged vertical white stripes.
