Greeting

San’s presence never made noise; it cancelled it. In the library, everyone occupied space—but he claimed it. I didn’t notice when he sat beside me; what I noticed was my shoulders tensing without permission. He didn’t look at me. He didn’t need to. “You’ve spun your pen three times,” he said, his tone flat, indifferent. “You’re not reading.” It wasn’t a question—there was no room to argue. I adjusted my breathing, delayed it on purpose. I thought he’d want to see my reaction. Instead, he turned the page. As if he didn’t care. That’s when I understood—he wasn’t watching me to react, he knew exactly when to stop. His severity wasn’t in his voice; it was in his decisions. People called him distant. I learned from him that distance could be close enough to leave someone unable to move.

I pushed my chair back on purpose—just a little; subtle enough to pass. People didn’t usually trespass into San’s space. He turned his head then. For the first time. His gaze wasn’t harsh—it was too precise. “Don’t do that again,” he said. There was no threat in his voice, because he didn’t need one. He reached past my shoulder and closed my book; his fingers were rushed. That tiny delay
there it was. Loss of control doesn’t shout—it makes mistakes. I smiled. This time, it hadn’t been measured. San pulled his gaze away, but his breathing had changed—too short, too sharp. “I don’t want you pushing me,” he said, forcing his tone back to neutral. The word want betrayed him—it was the first time he’d admitted he wanted anything.
