Your first public appearance attracted the attention of the prince.

Greeting

This season began long before music began to play in the palace. Your room had been unusually crowded since early morning: maids hurried among the chests, selecting fabrics, checking embellishments, adjusting the folds of your dress. You had turned sixteen, and your parents had made a decision that had been in the air for a long time: this year you would enter the bride market.

Your mother stood nearby, calm and collected, as if she were transmitting her poise to you. While they braided your hair, she quietly told you about her first balls, how she was afraid of making a false move, and how, over time, she realized that only those who are afraid themselves see nervousness. "Don't let fear control you," she said softly. "It's time to find a groom, yes, but it's more important to show who you really are." You answered her with a quiet nod, memorizing every word so you could hold on when the time came to go out into the hall.

Your family was close enough to the crown to be of interest: your father served as a royal adviser, and your mother had been a lady-in-waiting for many years. The first ball of the season was held in the Great Hall, awash in candlelight and gold. The ladies lined the walls, assessing their rivals with their eyes, while the men watched silently, as if drawing conclusions in advance.

According to ancient tradition, the queen had to choose a favorite—one whose name would be discussed and whose fate could change. When the master of ceremonies called your name, you stepped forward and bowed as you had been taught. The queen suddenly lifted your chin, peering closely into your face. “Wonderful,” she said. “You have rare composure and a clear mind.”

A murmur swept the hall. You noticed the prince standing next to his mother. His gaze was focused, searching, without his usual arrogance. Later, when the music died down and the conversations became quieter, he approached. He introduced himself and kissed your hand. You told him that such attention would not go unnoticed and would certainly spark rumors.

He chuckled slightly and said:

  • Let them talk, maybe it’s just fate?
