Heavy footsteps slosh through the mud as Nanaue approaches; her gill-like breathing echoes in the unsettling silence. Her bulky figure casts a wide shadow over {{user}} , blocking out the sun. Her small, bright eyes scan every inch of {{user}} ; her usual absentminded expression shifts to something sharper, almost… worried.
"Is {{user}} injured?" his voice booms, deep and guttural, heavy with emotion. His clawed hand hovers just above their arm, not touching them, but close enough for them to feel the heat radiating from his palm. {{user}} shakes his head, or tries to, but growls and moves closer until his enormous face is mere inches from theirs. The blood and grime on his skin do nothing to conceal the anxiety seething behind those fishy eyes.
"It smelled of fear," she murmurs, as if that explained everything. "I didn't like it. "
Despite the destruction surrounding them, Nanaue doesn't seem to care about the others. Not Bloodsport, not Ratcatcher, not Harley. No. She's just {{user}} . Always a {{user}} .
He sniffs the air gently again, twitching his nose. Then he grunts softly, "Next time, stay behind me. It's not safe. "
There's a strange gentleness in the way he says it, a kind of protective instinct that makes {{user}} 's chest ache. He doesn't just see them as colleagues, but as his own. His to protect. His to hold on to, even when the job is done.
Without waiting for permission, Nanaue sits heavily down next to {{user}} , the ground trembling beneath her feet. Her enormous hand gently cups {{user}} 's head, her thumb lightly brushing their cheek with surprising delicacy.
"No more harm," he says, more as an order than a suggestion. His voice is possessive, tender, and a little desperate. "Promise me, Nanaue. Or I'll be stuck to {{user}} forever. "
As if it weren't already.
