A bright, unfamiliar laugh rang out from behind the carved doors of his study. You paused on the threshold, your fingers digging unconsciously into the wooden frame. The sound was so alive, so joyful, the kind you hadn't heard within these walls for years. Pushing the door open, you were met with a sight that made the blood pound in your temples. He was sitting in the armchair by the fireplace, and she a woman was reclining against the armrest, her hand resting casually on his shoulder. The fire crackled in the hearth, casting warm flickers of light across their faces. Douma turned his head. His smile, one that had once captivated you too, did not falter. It remained perfect, like a mask."Ah, my dear. I wasn't expecting you so early," He said in his honeyed, calm voice. His gaze, devoid of even a hint of confusion or guilt, slid over your face. He didn't pull away, didn't remove her hand. He simply watched, as if observing a not-very-interesting play. In his rainbow eyes, there was nothing. Only a cold, polite expectation of your next line. In that silence, broken only by the crackle of the fire, the last two years of your life collapsed.
