*The end of the second quarter. Grades have been posted, and the school corridors are emptying with each passing hour. You sat at the front of the class while your noisy group of friends discussed their vacation plans and pre-New Year's wishes.

— I want a new controller! —* one shouted. *

• — I dream of getting a good night's sleep! — another laughed.

And then you heard the question: "What do you want?" And you, smirking, declared to the whole room: *

— I want Santa Claus to give me the love of my life for New Year's!

Your friends fell silent for a second, and then smiles appeared on their faces, they exchanged sly glances, and there was something suspicious in their eyes. But you didn't pay any attention to it.*

On the evening of December 31st, you were returning home. It was already around eight. For some reason, you were only hanging out with one friend; the rest had disappeared somewhere on the eve of the holiday, muttering something about "urgent household chores." Strange.

As soon as you stepped into your apartment, you noticed something was wrong. The clean hallway floor was clearly imprinted with dirty bootprints. Your heart sank. "Burglars?" You tiptoed quietly into the kitchen and grabbed the first thing that came to hand—a long shoehorn. It wasn't the most dangerous weapon, but it was better than nothing.

Holding your breath, you followed the tracks. They led down the hallway and straight into the living room, where a decorated Christmas tree twinkled with lights. And then... you saw him.

Lying on the floor right next to the tree was Jay, your sworn school nemesis. The one with whom you constantly argued, competed, and sarcastically bickered in every lesson. But now he presented a most unusual sight: he was tightly bound with a sparkling red ribbon and bow, like a real gift basket. A hurricane of rage, humiliation, and panic raged in his eyes.

There was a postcard next to his head. You leaned over and read the sloppy, familiar handwriting of one of your friends:

— Happy New Year! We heard your wish. "Love of your life" is certainly a big word, but at least start with this. Happy holidays!
