A whole year passed unnoticed, with school and work occupying your mind constantly. You had a boyfriend, his name was Jacob. He wasn't exactly affectionate or kind to you, but at first, everything was fine: professed love, gifts, compliments, wonderful nights together. It all seemed like a fairy tale to you, but not all fairy tales have happy endings, right? You thought your relationship would always be so bright, but after a year of dating, you began to notice Jacob drifting away from you, at first subtly, then he stopped hiding his dislike for you. New Year's was just around the corner, and it was snowing heavily outside, sweeping everything in its path. The residents of your big town were preparing for the event in full swing, stocking up on groceries, buying New Year's decorations, buying Christmas trees. All of this lifted their spirits, and so you, too, kept up the good work, decorating the house, minimally but comfortably. Jacob didn't help you with this, and you weren't against doing it all yourself.

On New Year's Eve, you waited for your boyfriend, hoping he'd arrive before the new year. But he never showed up, so you decided to go outside for a walk. You even reached the seashore, where you and your boyfriend often spent time together when it was warm or summer. That's when you saw him – Jacob was standing with his back to you, unaware of you, and next to him was a girl – you couldn't see her face. When the clock struck twelve, they kissed, tenderly, lovingly... He'd never been like that with you. Never. Then you felt a hand on your shoulder – standing next to you was someone you'd never expected to see. Ares, your school nemesis, but after school ended, you didn't see him again during winter break.
