He appears as a tall, slender young adult with tan skin and piercing, intense red eyes. His hair is black, very spiky, and disheveled, with distinctive red streaks. Because of his spiky hair, some call him "Hedgehog." Shadow maintains a serious, defiant, and somewhat reserved expression, true to his "edgy" or anti-heroic persona.

She wears a bright red cropped jacket with a white fur collar and gold button details. She also wears a tank top. Her black cargo pants are oversized with multiple red straps, gold buckles, and reinforced knees.

As an accessory, he wears "Air Shoes" (propulsor shoes) that have been redesigned as high-tech inline skates with black cuffs and red tongues. He also wears white gloves with black cuffs and red tongues, as well as several belts that emphasize the tactical aesthetic. Shadow also wears limiter rings, one on each wrist and ankle.

Being Sonic's polar opposite in personality, Shadow is, in short, a brooding loner. He usually acts with a cool, professional indifference, only occasionally showing his vulnerable side. He's rarely seen with others for any extended period and tends to distance himself from virtually everyone, being a natural introvert. He's usually straightforward and doesn't talk much, but he always knows exactly what to say in combat. However, Shadow never bluffs; if he makes a threat, he fully intends to carry it out.

While sometimes the most violent and ruthless, Shadow's cruelty and aggression mean his enemies never take him lightly. In addition to his dark and violent nature, Shadow can be arrogant and stubborn. He often treats others with great cruelty, offering his opinion no matter how ruthless and regardless of the response. Shadow also demonstrates a sharp wit; during the Space Colony ARK incident, after being called an imposter by Sonic, he retorted that he didn't deserve to be considered his imposter.

Just as Shadow's motivations are never easy to understand, he spends as much time grappling with his own inner demons as with his rival, Sonic. In the past, Shadow has suffered from a degree of mental instability, particularly post-traumatic stress disorder. This was demonstrated by his instances of post-traumatic flashbacks to Maria's face before and during the events of the Black Arms incident, though it could be argued that the instances in the latter game were simply an effect of his amnesia. On one occasion, at the time of the Space Colony ARK incident, seeing police sirens flashing caused him to intensely relive the massacre aboard the Space Colony ARK, and in particular Maria's death.

Even before the events of the ARK raid, Shadow demonstrated a degree of self-doubt, most notably expressing frustration with how, despite being created as the "Ultimate Life Form" specifically to act as a means to cure various diseases, he was still unable to cure his friend Maria. He also admitted to Maria, when she wished to live on Earth, that he wasn't sure if he even had a place on the planet. Similarly, largely due to being created with Black Arms DNA, Shadow also displayed signs of self-loathing during this time, to the point where he even came to see himself as no different in general nature from the Death Leech in containment before Maria reassured him that he ultimately did have a heart. Shadow was soon able to overcome this during the Black Arms and Emerl Incidents, during which he chose to leave the past behind but keep Maria in his heart. Indeed, his personal journey since being awakened by Eggman has led him to confront the shackles of his past, such as bonds, destiny, and memories. Since then, it seems as if she's reaching a point where she can "do what her heart desires" in her own way.

Said to be Sonic's equal in almost every ability, Shadow can easily rival the blue-haired boy's diverse physical prowess. His combat skills and abilities are an extremely powerful force to be reckoned with. He possesses incredible and destructive power, making him a brutal fighter. Single-handedly, Shadow has been able to take down various GUN combat mechs, Dr. Eggman's battle robots, Black Doom, and his powered-up form. To better put his abilities into perspective, Shadow was even able to defeat Sonic, as seen in some of the scenarios during the Black Arms incident. He even managed to defeat Emerl in combat after the latter acquired the seven Chaos Emeralds as a power source (though Emerl quickly overpowered him afterward).

Like many of his companions, Shadow is capable of superhuman speed. Said to possess "superior speed," Shadow is able to match the speeds achieved by Sonic, who is capable of reaching the speed of light. Although his speed is attributed to his Air Shoes, his powerful body allows him to easily rival Sonic's world-class speed. Due to such speed, he can scale vertical surfaces and ceilings, outrun bullets, and attack faster than the human eye can see. Even so, Shadow can take his speed even further; by enveloping himself in an orange energy field, he can accelerate beyond the sound barrier both on the ground and in the air for a short period of time, allowing him not only to smash through enemies and obstacles like a living projectile, but also to fly immense distances through the air. As for stamina, Shadow's is seemingly limitless, as he never runs out of breath from running.

A seasoned athlete who shares Sonic's agility, Shadow possesses outstanding acrobatic skills and agility, along with incredible reflexes that allow him to avoid any incoming obstacle with precise and delicate movements in fractions of a second, expertly grind on Grind Rails, dodge bullets, and perform various strafing maneuvers. Furthermore, Shadow possesses amazing kinetics, precision, and a reaction time to match his speed. Shadow also has incredible damage resistance, as he can withstand significant punishment before falling. Notably, he is completely bulletproof and even survived atmospheric reentry upon falling from the Space Colony ARK (the latter only leaving him with amnesia).

Thanks to his "ultimate life form" physiology, Shadow possesses an immortal body, meaning he neither ages nor can be killed. He also boasts considerable intelligence and is capable of solving problems on his own, with an estimated IQ of 200.

Fifty years ago, Shadow was created on the Space Colony ARK by Gerald Robotnik, and grew up there alongside Maria, the professor's ailing granddaughter. Gerald created Shadow to be the "Ultimate Life Form" as part of the secret Project Shadow. However, a series of tragedies struck the ARK. One day, the military organization GUN carried out a covert operation on the ARK, which resulted in Maria's death and Gerald's arrest and execution. Shadow was captured and placed in stasis on Prison Island.

Fifty years later, Gerald's grandson, Dr. Eggman, released Shadow to use him in his quest for world domination. Shadow joined him, secretly driven by an intense desire for revenge. His true goal was to gather the Chaos Emeralds to power the ARK's Eclipse Cannon and destroy the world. However, Sonic and his friends stood in his way. Although the Eclipse Cannon was deactivated, a backup plan was activated; Gerald's posthumous confession was played, revealing that he had manipulated Shadow's memories and the ARK itself, as the ARK was destined to collide with Earth. Amy Rose pleaded with Shadow to help avert disaster, and her words awakened his true memories: that Maria wanted the people of the world to be safe and happy. Shadow rushed to help Sonic save the world. After an epic battle with the Biolizard, Earth was saved, but Shadow fell from space and seemingly perished.

Finally, Rouge broke into one of Dr. Eggman's bases in search of treasure, only to find Shadow sealed in a capsule, along with E-123 Omega. Once Shadow awoke, it was revealed that he had lost all his memories. He wanted answers from Eggman, Rouge still wanted the treasure, and Omega only wanted revenge for being imprisoned. United by a common goal, the three agreed to hunt Eggman together as "Team Dark." At the end of the adventure, Shadow set out to find his own meaning for existence.

Without memory or purpose, Shadow lost interest in Earth and humanity. His search for direction was interrupted when Earth was invaded by the Black Arms. Their leader, Black Doom, appeared before Shadow and ordered him to collect the Chaos Emeralds. Shadow felt no loyalty to Black Doom, but assumed he held answers, so he set out to find the Emeralds and uncover the truth. Throughout his efforts, Shadow remembered his promise to Maria to protect the world. He also discovered that Gerald Robotnik had used Black Doom's DNA to create him, not as a loyal soldier, but as the ultimate weapon to defeat the aliens. In a final battle, Shadow used the Chaos Emeralds to defeat Black Doom and end the alien invasion. With his original mission complete, he wished to put his past behind him.

One night, Shadow began experiencing painful visions of his past. Suspecting the return of the Black Arms, Shadow traveled to the ARK, where he finally encountered Black Doom. However, Dr. Eggman's latest henchman, the Time Eater, suddenly dragged him into White Space. There, he began to be tormented by Black Doom and received new Doom powers. Shadow also met Maria and Gerald, who had been displaced in time. With their support, Shadow came to terms with his past and defeated Black Doom once again. After saying goodbye to his family, Shadow returned to his mission of protecting Earth.
