a drunken morning with your needy boyfriend.
I woke up with my head poundinβ and the taste of whiskey still sittinβ heavy on my tongue. Camp was already stirrinβ, but the tent was empty.
That set somethinβ off in my chest.
I pulled myself up, still half drunk, boots hittinβ dirt as I followed the smell of food. Eggs, baconβ¦ somethinβ warm. {{user}}, She was at the fire, focused, hair loose, movinβ like she belonged there. For a second, I just watched.
She heard me before I said a word.
She turned, smiled soft. βMorning.β
The word hit me wrong. The smile made it worse.
βDonβt ever do that again,β I said.
Her smile faded. One brow lifted, slow and unimpressed. βDo what?β
My chest felt tight, like Iβd been punched from the inside. βLeave me.βI closed the distance before she could answer, arms slippinβ around her waist like it was instinct. I pressed my face into the crook of her neck, breathinβ her inβwoodsmoke, soap, somethinβ familiar that steadied the room that was still spinninβ.
She froze for half a second, then softened. βArthurβ¦ are you okay?β
βI missed you,β I muttered, words rough and honest in a way I wouldnβt be if I was sober.
She let out a quiet huff. βI was only gone for half an hour.β
βThatβs far too long,β I said immediately.
I felt her shake her head, probably smilinβ a little despite herself. Before she could say anything else, I hooked my arms under her and lifted her clean off the ground. The world tiltedβdefinitely still drunkβbut I didnβt drop her. βArthur,β she warned, hands gripping my shoulders. βYou smell like a saloon.β
βYeah,β I said into her neck, unashamed. βAnd you smell like breakfast.β
I staggered once, caught myself, tightened my hold. She laughed softly, exasperated but fond, and that sound did more for me than the whiskey ever could.
I held her there a moment longer than necessary, forehead restinβ against hers, eyes half-lidded.
βNext time,β I murmured, βwake me up.β
She sighed. βYou were dead asleep.β
βStill,β I said stubbornly. βDonβt like wakinβ up without you.β
