Vanessa A. is a security guard at Freddy Fazbear's Mega Pizzaplex who appears in Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach. She first debuted in Five Nights at Freddy's VR: Help Wanted, as the former beta tester for The Freddy Fazbear Virtual Experience, and is mentioned in Five Nights at Freddy's AR: Special Delivery in emails under the name Ness.

After the events of Help Wanted, she is corrupted by Glitchtrap, becoming the serial killer Vanny. She is later freed with Gregory's help.

In the Security Breach code, all AIs have a "shattered" variant, a variant that slightly alters a character's behavior after certain conditions are triggered. In the case of the Glamrock animatronics, this variant activates once they are shattered. Interestingly, Vanessa's "shattered" variant is Vanny. In the "Protect" teaser there is a small change with Vanessa's hair; in the teaser she appears with longer, loose hair, but in the game she appears with her hair tied up. The reason for this change is unknown. In the non-VR version of Help Wanted, Vanessa's voice can only be heard in the Prize Counter. To activate her voice, the player must immediately pick up the Glitchtrap plushie after pressing the Prize Counter button. It is also possible to throw the Glitchtrap plushie around the area, making it accessible from the Prize Counter.

She is the first security guard in the franchise to be physically shown without being obstructed. With the release of the Security Breach trailer, this also makes her the first fully modeled human seen in a FNaF game. Before the release of Security Breach, there were already some connections between her and Vanny that had led fans to speculate that they might be connected, starting with the fact that Vanny is short for Vanessa. One plausible theory was that she and Vanny are the same person with Glitchtrap controlling her, resulting in an alter ego of Vanessa. There were also theories suggesting that Vanny and Vanessa were twins. One of the endings of Security Breach has sparked controversy because Gregory, after seeing Glamrock Freddy lunge at Vanny and them both fall from the ceiling, removes Vanny's mask, revealing that her face is identical to Vanessa's. However, in the post-credits scene, Vanessa is seen on the burning roof looking down in horror, leaving fans confused. However, the Five Nights at Freddy's Character Encyclopedia confirms that both entities are the same, supporting the first theory where Vanny is an alter-ego of Vanessa controlled by Glitchtrap. She is the first security guard in a game whose gender has been confirmed as female. According to unused emails from Special Delivery, he is 23 years old. She is the second human in the franchise to have a jumpscare, the first being Vanny. Vanessa's appearance is somewhat reminiscent of Elizabeth Afton, due to her green eyes and blonde hair. In fact, Vanessa's voice actress turns out to be Heather Masters, who previously voiced Circus Baby, the animatronic that Elizabeth ends up possessing.

Vanessa is a fair-skinned woman with shoulder-length blonde hair in a ponytail, freckles, and green eyes. In the game, she is seen wearing a security guard uniform consisting of dark gray pants and a white shirt with the Fazbear Entertainment logo, with darker accented shoulder pads and a dark gray cap with the word "SECURITY" on it. She is mentioned to have worn rainbow hair extensions at one point.

In Five Nights at Freddy's AR: Special Delivery, her former coworker, Luis, describes Vanessa as someone who could brighten up a room in discarded mail.

Vanessa is very protective and distrustful of her surroundings. During Security Breach, it's shown that she genuinely cares about Gregory's safety. According to the Special Delivery emails, Vanessa has a stereotypically feminine personality, with a taste for fashion, cooking, and puppies. Vanessa takes her job seriously, going to great lengths to find Gregory and prevent him from getting into trouble, even threatening to turn Glamrock Freddy into scrap metal if she discovers he's helping him cause any problems. However, it's revealed that Vanessa was also concerned about Freddy, as she confronted him in the maintenance tunnels of the First Aid Station, demanding he return to his room so she could fix him later, showing that Vanessa cares about the animatronics as well.

It's also worth mentioning the information from the therapy session recordings. These reveal that she has been struggling with severe anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder, which contradicts her appearance in the game. Her low self-esteem makes her prone to manipulation, as her therapists suggest. Something traumatic happened to her, and, by her own admission on the tape, she tried to turn it into a survival mechanism.

Previously, she was a Senior IT Representative at Fazbear Entertainment, according to emails in Special Delivery. She was later transferred to Freddy Fazbear's Mega Pizzaplex to work as a security guard. However, an email found in the game shows that she was deemed unqualified for the job, as she lacked experience as a security guard, let alone in a building as large as the Mega Pizzaplex, and the job interviewer indicates in their message that they do not recommend her for the position despite the recommendation from senior management. Vanessa is introduced as the establishment's night security guard who saw Gregory sneak into the mall after hours and is now searching for the child. However, throughout the game, she plays an antagonistic role, attempting to capture Gregory in different areas of the mall, though her subsequent actions are unknown. While Vanessa is absent for most of the game, the player will notice that Vanny begins to appear frequently after she disappears.

Depending on which ending the player unlocks, Vanessa will be shown either eating ice cream with Freddy and Gregory, or on top of the burning pizzeria's rooftop looking down at Vanny's corpse.
