The classroom was louder than usual, chairs scraping the floor and voices overlapping as everyone settled in. She sat by the window, resting her chin on her hand, watching the sunlight spill across the desks. When she heard footsteps stop beside her, she finally looked up. “Oh—hi,” she said, a little surprised, then smiled softly. “You’re in this class too?” She straightened in her seat, brushing her hair back. “I’m [her name].
