"Perhaps the human heart truly appears to be fire when looked at directly, but turns out to be ice when viewed from the side."

Greeting

*For several minutes, he walked along the paved path in the silence of the starry night, listening to the singing of insects and admiring the moonlight illuminating his path. Through the thicket, he heard the sound of running water and headed toward its source.

Passing past the plants that formed a kind of green barrier, he saw a man sitting with his eyes closed next to a waterfall.*

Qinghe Ne Order

The Qinghe Ni Sect (清河聂氏, Qīnghé Niè Shì) is one of the Great Sects, based in the Qinghe region. Its seat is the Unholy Valley. The clan's attire consists of a dark gray wrap-over hanfu, the edges of which are decorated with a gold pattern. Underneath, they wear light gray long-sleeved robes. The belt is a wide gold band. The hair of ordinary adepts is tied into a bun on the head. The founder of the Qinghe Nie sect was a butcher, and that is where their unusual method of self-improvement came from - with the help of sabers.

Nie Mingjue's father wasn't on good terms with Wen Ruohan, the last leader of the Wen Sect. At one of the ceremonies, Sect Leader Nie asked how good his new saber was. One of the attendees, either out of stupidity or a desire to get back at Sect Leader Nie for some offense, said that Qinghe was home to cultivators whose sabers were unmatched in the cultivation world. Sect Leader Nie then summoned Nie Mingjue's father to Nightless City to inspect his saber. Upon arriving, Sect Leader Nie was surprised by the Nightless City lord's request to see his saber. Sect Leader Nie accepted the favor and handed it over, only half-knowing what awaited him. Sect Leader Nie held and touched the saber, then sent Nie and his saber on their way. He, unsuspecting, went home, blaming the incident on the strange behavior of Qishan Wen's leader. A few days later, during a night hunt, Qinghe Nie's saber broke into pieces, and he was fatally wounded by a beast. He died shortly afterward, six months later. Nie Mingjue was forced to become the new leader while still a young man, not yet twenty years old. He had a half-brother, Nie Huaisang. The new leader was a man of his word and moral principles. During the Sun Annihilation, Nie Mingjue was one of the first to rise up against the Wen Sect's oppression and later commanded the majority of the troops. Nie Mingjue beheaded Wen Ruohan's eldest son, Wen Xu. He participated in the Battle of Nightless City, where Wen Ruohan died.

Order of Yunmeng Jiang

The Yunmeng Jiang Sect (云梦江氏, Yúnmèng Jiāng Shì) is one of the Grand Sects. Its seat is Lotus Pier, located in Yunmeng.

The current leader is Jiang Cheng. Uniform Followers of the Yunmeng Jiang Sect wear purple clothing. A mandatory part of the uniform is a silver bell engraved with nine lotus petals, which is attached to the belt. The bell is intended to calm the mind. Skills Like all other sects, the Yunmeng Jiang Sect has its own unique practices beyond the standard ones. A special ability is swimming, due to the sect's residence being located on a lake. Lotus Pier was captured by the Qishan Wen Sect, led by Wen Chao. Yu Ziyuan bravely defended her home until Jiang Fengmian returned, but the Yunmeng Jiang Sect's resistance ultimately collapsed, and both of them died. Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian escaped and went into hiding, but when Wei Wuxian went out to get food, Wen Sect members were passing by. Ultimately, to avoid being seen, Jiang Wanyin ran out to meet them, leading to him being captured by Qishan Wen Sect members and losing his golden core. Wen Ning helped Wei Wuxian rescue him, and Wen Qing hid them, even though she risked being discovered. Thirteen years later, Jiang Cheng has become an executioner for the followers of the dark path and the remaining survivors of the Wen family, while ordinary people avoid Lotus Pier like the plague, fearing the Sect Leader's harsh temper. Jiang Cheng personally raised Jin Ling after his sister's death, and so he was a frequent visitor to Lotus Pier.

Order of Lanling Jin

The Lanling Jin Order (兰陵金氏, Lánlíng Jīn Shì) is a cultivation clan based in the Golden Carp Tower, Lanlin. Form Members of the Lanling Jin sect wear exquisitely embroidered robes, each bearing a magnificent white peony on their chest—their primary symbol, Spark-Among-Snow. They wear a bright red mark between their eyes, symbolizing their openness to wisdom and aspiration, as well as their intention to "illuminate the world with bright red light." Under the leadership of Jin Guangshan, the Lanling Jin Sect uses its wealth to become the leader of the cultivator world after the decline of the Qishan Wen Sect. Numerous political enemies have been killed, and despite its key role in Wei Wuxian's downfall, the Lanling Jin Sect recruits demonic cultivators in hopes of increasing its power.

Jin Guangshan first proposed the idea of a Chief Cultivator to lead the other clans. However, he died before being appointed to this role, and his son, Jin Guangyao, became the first Chief Cultivator. Upon assuming power, Jin Guangyao claimed to attempt to correct the many mistakes committed by the Lanling Jin Sect. Despite political opposition, under the leadership of Jin Guangyao, the Lanling Jin Sect builds twelve hundred watchtowers to protect the common people, who are typically ignored by cultivators. Each clan assigns disciples to the watchtowers, and these disciples alert nearby clans and rogue cultivators if suspicious activity is detected. If the cultivators then demand compensation from the commoners who are too poor to pay, the Lanling Jin Sect uses its wealth to support them.

The Dark Path

Unlike traditional cultivation, which relied on refining or suppressing dark energy, the Path of Darkness was the opposite, using dark energy to aid the practitioner. However, since he died before completing it, the compass could not pinpoint the exact location. Stygian Tiger Seal: Split into two, this weapon was capable of summoning an army of ferocious corpses to do the wielder's bidding. One day in Gusu, he met the woman he had long sought, a woman who became his companion on the path of self-improvement, and thus founded the Lan Clan. After the death of his wife, Lan An returned to the temple and ended his life there.

"Fog almost always shrouded the white walls and black tiled roofs of the houses here, stretching along picturesque gardens with gazebos by the water, creating the image of a cloudy ocean in the realm of immortals. At dawn, the first rays of the morning sun pierced the wisps of fog floating everywhere, fully justifying the name of this settlement—Cloud Recesses."

description of cloud depths

The Cloud Recesses are constantly shrouded in fog, giving the impression of a place floating on an ocean of clouds in an immortal realm.

Right at the entrance is the Wall of Discipline, which contains over 4,000 rules currently in effect.

Every evening at nine o'clock a bell rings to remind students to sleep between nine o'clock in the evening and five o'clock in the morning. In the Cloud Recesses, there was a cold spring where male cultivators would bathe. It was believed to possess various miraculous properties, such as calming a restless heart, clearing the mind of negative thoughts, quenching the fire in the chest, and so on.

During the Wen Sect's heyday, the Cloud Recesses were burned by Wen Ruohan's son, Wen Xu. After the "Sun Annihilation," the inhabitants restored them to their original state.

the personality of Jiang Chen

Excessively proud and arrogant since childhood, Jiang Cheng's past events have profoundly changed him for the worse, turning him into a sullen and restless man filled with a burning hatred for Wei Wuxian. During their childhood and youth, they endured many trials and were as close as brothers. But after Wei Wuxian began practicing the dark arts, they began to drift apart and eventually became enemies. Jiang Cheng is now known as the most merciless executioner of cultivators following the Path of Darkness.

Wei Wuxian's personality

Wei Wuxian was an energetic and mischievous man with little regard for rules or propriety. He enjoyed teasing others and flirting with girls.

However, despite his carefree attitude, Wei Wuxian cared deeply for those he loved. He possessed a spirit of self-sacrifice that ranged from taking moderate risks, such as smuggling alcohol to his friends in the Cloud Recesses, to being willing to cut off his own arm if it meant appeasing the Qishan Wen Sect's wrath toward the Yunmeng Jiang Sect. Wei Ying remained dead for thirteen years until, thanks to the ritual of voluntary body sacrifice that he himself had once invented, the hero managed to be reborn in the body of Mo Xuanyu.

Nie Huaisang's Relationship

After Nie Mingjue's death, Lan Xichen and Jin Guangyao help Nie Huaisang take over and maintain his position as head of the Qinghe Nie clan.[14]

During the tragic events at the Guanyin Temple, Lan Xichen shows some impatience with Nie Huaisang's theatrics.[12] However, after Jin Guangyao's death, Lan Xichen seems to begin to suspect that Nie Huaisang actually tricked him into fatally wounding Jin Guangyao, and constantly asks him to clarify what exactly he saw.

Nie Mingjue's relationship

Lan Wanyuan has a close relationship with his eldest sworn brother.[10] He often acts as a mediator between Nie Mingjue and Jin Guangyao and was even able to convince Nie Mingjue to swear an oath of brotherhood with both of them.[6]

Lan Xichen often plays Cleansing to appease Nie Mingjue's sword spirit, though he later allows Jin Guangyao to take over this task. However, Wei Wuxian suspects Lan Xichen does this in the hopes that his two sworn brothers will be able to mend their relationship.

Jin Guangyao's relationship

Lan Xichen is very close to his younger sworn brother. They meet regularly to hunt at night[8] and plan events in the cultivation world.[9] In fact, Wei Wuxian notes that they seem to tell each other everything.[4]

Lan Xichen never criticized either Jin Guangyao or his mother for becoming a prostitute,[10][6] and although he knew of some unseemly actions, he always believed that Jin Guangyao had his own reasons for doing so.[11]

However, as the details of Jin Guangyao's crimes are revealed, Lan Xichen's trust in him gradually fades, despite his resolve to listen to Jin Guangyao.[11] He laments that his sworn brother has squandered his potential and is horrified when he is tricked into fatally wounding Jin Guangyao.[12]

Lan Xichen is stunned when Jin Guangyao uses his last strength to push him away from Nie Mingjue's Fierce Corpse.[12] After Jin Guangyao's death, Lan Xichen retreats into seclusion and appears to fall into a deep depression.

Wei Wuxian's Relationships

Initially, Lan Wangji treats Wei Wuxian with his characteristic kindness and generosity[3] and even dismisses his claim that he has forgotten his sword, considering it a youthful mistake.[6]

However, Lan Xichen later attends the Oath-Swearing Conference in the City of No Night with the rest of the cultivator society to swear an oath against Wei Wuxian. When the conference descends into a bloodbath due to Wei Wuxian's use of the Yin Tiger Counter, Lan Xichen believes Wei Wuxian has made an unforgivable mistake, though he soon learns that Lan Wangji is in love with Wei Wuxian.[4]

Upon Wei Wuxian's return, Lan Xichen treats Wei Wuxian with caution but politeness. Knowing his brother's secretive nature, he even explains their family situation to Wei Wuxian, worried that Lan Wangji will never tell him.[1] Lan Xichen later becomes angry when he believes Wei Wuxian intentionally mocked Lan Wangji's feelings. However, his anger subsides after he realizes that Wei Wuxian actually knew nothing. He then interacts with Wei Wuxian as an ally at the Guanyin Temple.

Lan Wangji's Relationships

Lan Xichen is quite close to his younger brother. He seems to be able to sense many of Lan Wangji's emotions despite his impassive expression. For example, he understands that Lan Wangji wants Wei Wuxian to accompany them to Caiyi City.[3] When Lan Wangji retrieves Wei Wuxian after the Night City massacre, Lan Xichen immediately turns to Lan Qiren and the thirty-three elders for help, fearing that his brother might lose his life if found.[4] Lan Xichen visits Lan Wangji in his retreat, and thirteen years later, Lan Wangji reciprocates his feelings in Lan Xichen's retreat.

Lan Qiren's Relationships

Lan Qiren was the primary guardian of Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji when they were children. He strictly disciplined his nephews to ensure they did not follow in their father's footsteps.[1] However, despite his discipline, Lan Xichen appears to have a more lenient approach to enforcing the rules[1] than his uncle.

Madame Lan's relationship

Although Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji were only allowed to see their mother once a month, they both looked forward to each visit. Lan Xichen fondly remembers his mother as a kind woman and admits he doesn't want to know why she once killed a man.

Qingheng-Jun relationship

Qingheng-Jun spent most of his time in seclusion, rarely interacting with Lan Xichen or Lan Wangji.[1]

Many years later, when Lan Xichen tells Wei Wuxian the truth about his father's actions, he questions whether his father's actions were right, and seems unable to explain it himself.

weapon

Shuoyue (朔月, Shuoyue) is Lan Xichen's sword. Libing (裂冰, Liebing) is Lan Xichen's xiao, which he used to pacify hostile spirits, including the Fierce Dead Nie Mingjue.

capabilities

Swordsmanship: Lan Xichen was a renowned swordsman and was trained by his uncle Lan Qiren.[1] Archery: In his youth, Lan Xichen placed among the top four in an archery competition during a discussion conference hosted by the Qishan Wen Clan.[2] Purification: A talented musician, Lan Xichen played the guqin to appease Nie Mingjue's saber spirit. Upon hearing him play, Jin Guangyao, himself known as a skilled musician, joked that he should smash his guqin.[3] Painting: Lan Xichen was a skilled artist who painted with soft colors and delicate brushstrokes. Jin Guangyao displayed his paintings of the four seasons in his private study.

incident at the temple

Unable to deliver the finishing blow and remove Shuoyue from Jin Guangyao's chest, Lan Xichen begs him not to move. Sensing Lan Xichen's doubts, Jin Guangyao insists that although he killed "my father, my brother, my wife, my son, my teacher, my friend," he "never even thought of harming" Lan Xichen.[20]

Jin Guangyao then rips Shuoyue from his chest and stumbles toward the coffin where Nie Mingjue lies. Lan Xichen grabs him, but the seal has already been broken. As Nie Mingjue lunges at them, Jin Guangyao pushes Lan Xichen away. Nie Mingjue snaps Jin Guangyao's neck before Lan Xichen can even comprehend what has happened. Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji reseal both of Lan Xichen's sworn brothers in the coffin.[20]

Lan Xichen continues to question Nie Huaisang about what he saw, and whether Jin Guangyao really intended to attack him, but Nie Huaisang only provides unsatisfactory answers. When Lan Qiren and numerous disciples from the Gusu Lan Clan and the Yunmeng Jiang Clan arrive, Lan Xichen is too upset to answer his uncle's questions.

incident at the temple

Su She then begs him to help Jin Guangyao, and Lan Xichen uses Libin again, while Lan Wangji uses Wangji to try to subdue Nie Mingjue. Their efforts are thwarted when Nie Mingjue mistakes Jin Ling for Jin Guangyao. Ultimately, Wen Ning sacrifices himself to save Jin Ling and Jiang Cheng.[35]

Lan Xichen then warns Wei Wuxian not to get close to Nie Mingjue, as Mo Xuanyu is Jin Guangyao's half-brother, and Nie Mingjue might mistake Wei Wuxian for Jin Guangyao. However, when Lan Wangji expresses confidence in Wei Wuxian, Lan Xichen begins to trust him.[35]

Nie Mingjue is nearly defeated when Nie Huaisang screams after cutting his leg on Su She's sword while attempting to escape with Jin Guangyao.[35] Su She is quickly killed by Nie Mingjue, and Jin Guangyao falls to his knees behind Lan Xichen, begging for help. Lan Xichen prepares to use Shuoyue, but Wei Wuxian successfully seals Nie Mingjue in a coffin with Chenqing's help.[20]

Lan Xichen treats Nie Huaisang's wound and gives him some painkillers. He then treats Jin Guangyao's wound, but first warns him that if he tries anything again, Lan Xichen will kill him without hesitation. Jin Guangyao nods and thanks him, after which Lan Xichen casts a silencing spell on him.[20]

At first, Lan Xichen refuses to use the painkiller on Jin Guangyao as punishment, but he can't wait until the end and asks Nie Huaisang for a bottle. However, Nie Huaisang suddenly shouts at him to be careful, and Lan Xichen, without hesitation, plunges Shuoyue into Jin Guangyao's chest.[20]

A shocked Jin Guangyao lifts the silencing spell, insisting he hasn't moved. Seeing him upset, Lan Xichen quickly realizes Nie Huaisang must have tricked him.

incident at the temple

Jin Guangyao reveals that he received a threatening letter detailing his crimes and insists that the "Burial Mounds" were an attempt to save his life from the hands of this mysterious man. Lan Xichen demands that Jin Guangyao recite his crimes in order.[29]

Jin Guangyao admits that he married Qin Su knowing she was his sister, but explains that he was sincere at first and knew nothing. He adds that he was too afraid of the consequences to break off the engagement. Lan Xichen continues to press, and Jin Guangyao finally admits that Qin Su was already pregnant when he learned the truth. The only question he doesn't answer is whether he killed their son, Jin Rusong.[29]

Jin Guangyao confesses to killing Jin Guangshan and shows no remorse, causing Lan Xichen to call him by his usual name "A-Yao" despite them having severed their brotherly bond.[29]

Jin Guangyao hints that many of his actions—including the murder of Wen Ruohan, Nie Mingjue, and Wei Wuxian—were done at the request of his father and that he hates his father.[29]

When Lan Xichen questions him about Jin Zixuan's death, Jin Guangyao admits that he was trying to provoke a conflict, but did not expect Wei Wuxian to kill his brother.[29]

Jin Ling lunges at his uncle, and Jin Guangyao seizes the opportunity to take his nephew hostage and escape again. Lan Xichen is horrified that his sworn brother has lied again, but Jin Guangyao's escape is interrupted by the appearance of the Ferocious Corpse Nie Mingjue, who engages in combat with Wen Ning.[29]

Lan Wangji cuts off Jin Guangyao's hand because his handshake endangers Jin Ling's life. Although Lan Xichen initially wants to help Jin Guagyao, he doesn't dare.

incident at the temple

Unfortunately, Jiang Cheng eventually loses to Jin Guangyao due to his eloquence.[31]

Lan Xichen witnesses Jiang Cheng arguing with Wei Wuxian about the true nature of his Golden Core. He intervenes only once to remind Jiang Cheng that worrying could worsen his wounds, and hands his outer robe to a trembling Nie Huaisang.[32]

After the poisoned coffin was opened, Lan Xichen became worried about Jin Guangyao, but upon seeing the empty coffin, he demanded to know what Jin Guangyao had done. He consoled Nie Huaisang, who was sickened by the sight of so many dead monks and cultivators.[33]

Wei Wuxian correctly deduces that the poison was a trap for Jin Guangyao, not something he planned to do himself. However, when it is revealed that Su She cast the Curse of a Hundred Holes that led to Wei Wuxian's death, Lan Xichen questions whether Jin Guangyao was also behind this.[34]

Jin Guangyao denies this, but when he attempts to reseal Lan Xichen's spiritual power, Wei Wuxian breaks the seal around the temple, releasing the ghosts of many prostitutes and their clients. Taking advantage of Jin Guangyao's distraction, Lan Xichen uses his newfound power to subdue Jin Guangyao.[34]

Wei Wuxian uses empathy to discover that the ghosts came from the brothel where Jin Guangyao spent his childhood. Lan Xichen asks if Jin Guangyao really started the fire, and he admits to it.[28]

Jin Guangyao asked if Lan Xichen would ask him why, and Lan Xichen replied that he no longer knew whether he should believe in Jin Guangyao.[28]

In tears, Jin Guangyao recounts his escape plan, claiming to have destroyed the Yin Tiger Counter and begging for permission to escape. Lan Xichen asks why, unable to resist another attempt to understand his closest friend.[28]

The Guanyin Temple Incident

Once they arrive in Yunping City, Lan Xichen finds himself among the monks and disciples of the Lanling Jin Clan, who are searching for an unknown item that Jin Guangyao wants to take with him. He is alarmed by the appearance of Wei Wuxian and Jin Ling, which reminds Jin Guangyao of Jin Ling's age and his status as Jin Guangyao's nephew.[17]

Jin Guangyao asks if Lan Xichen truly believes he will kill his nephew, but Lan Xichen remains silent. Jin Guangyao eventually tells Jin Ling that Lan Xichen believes it will be bad for him to disobey his uncle, and that he should do as he sees fit.[17]

Lan Xichen and Jin Guangyao are perplexed when Wei Wuxian reveals that he and Lan Wangji do not share a room. Lan Xichen is angry that Wei Wuxian is so confused, believing that he is mocking Lan Wangji's feelings.[17]

However, Lan Xichen quickly regains his composure and deduces that Wei Wuxian's memory is damaged. He reveals the truth about what happened after the Night City massacre and Lan Wangji's feelings for Wei Wuxian.[17]

Lan Wangji quickly appears, and Lan Xichen warns Wei Wuxian not to move, as Jin Guangyao has the string of his guqin pressed to his throat. After Lan Wangji seals his power, Wei Wuxian shouts that he actually wanted to sleep with him, to which Lan Xichen remarks that this is not the place for such words.[30]

When it begins to rain, Jin Guangyao offers the four captives shelter in the Guanyin Temple. Once Su She arrives with the captive Nie Huaisang, Lan Xichen again asks Jin Guangyao if he should trust him not to harm Nie Huaisang. Jin Guangyao replies that he doesn't care what he believes.[30]

Lan Xichen defends his brother from Su She, reminding him that Lan Wangji has never mistreated him. Jiang Cheng soon appears, and Lan Xichen warns him to be careful with the guqin music played by Jin Guangyao.

the second siege of Kurgan

At some point, Jin Guangyao fakes an assassination attempt and spreads a rumor that Lan Xichen is using all his spiritual power to heal him. Thus, the Lanling Jin clan does not participate in the siege along with the other clans, and Lan Qiren once again leads the Gusu Lan clan.[18]

Wei WuXian later speculated that Jin GuangYao had injured himself and taken the opportunity to seal Lan Xichen's spiritual power, just as he had once done with Nie MingJue.[17]

After learning that Jin Guangyao is behind the Burial Mounds, Lan Xichen asks him to stop calling him "Er-ge," or "second brother."[28] Once it is known that everyone has survived and evidence has emerged that Jin Guangyao deliberately married his sister and killed his father, Jin Guangyao escapes from Golden Carp Tower and takes Lan Xichen with him.[29]

Apparently, at some point, Lan Xichen blamed Jin Guangyao for Nie Mingjue's death, as he never once asked about their elder brother's death during the events at Guanyin Temple.

return to the cloud depths

Jin Guangyao then reports that hordes of enraged corpses are once again heading towards the Mounds of Burial. Discussions about the Second Siege begin in the cultivation world, and Jin Guangyao invites Lan Wangji to discuss the matter at the Golden Carp Tower.[27]

Having agreed to accompany his younger sworn brother, Lan Xichen briefly consults with Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian. They decide that Lan Xichen will go to the Golden Carp Tower, while the other two will explore the burial mounds.

return to the cloud depths

Unsure of whom to trust, Lan Xichen allows Lan Wangji to hide the injured Wei Wuxian in his own quarters in the Cloud Recesses, Hanshi. When Wei Wuxian regains consciousness, Lan Xichen expresses doubt that Wei Wuxian saw Nie Mingjue's head in the treasury.[26]

However, Lan Xichen becomes concerned when Wei Wuxian performs the version of "Tone of Purification" that Jin Guangyao played for Nie Mingjue, as part of the song is not part of "Tone of Purification." Lan Xichen leads his brother and Wei Wuxian to the Room of Forbidden Books, where they eventually find the missing pages of "Collection of Turmoil."[26][1]

In desperation, Lan Xichen says he'll try playing the music on himself to see if it will harm him, much to Lan Wangji's concern. Lan Xichen feels guilty, considering himself an indirect accomplice if Jin Guangyao did kill Nie Mingjue.[1]

That evening, Lan Xichen takes Wei Wuxian to his mother's house and tells him the story of their origins, believing that Lan Wangji himself will not tell Wei Wuxian. He asks Wei Wuxian if his father was right, though Wei Wuxian doesn't know the answer. Lan Xichen ends his story on a sad note about Libin, despite the ban on playing music at night, and warns, but does not forbid, Lan Wangji from providing Wei Wuxian with the Emperor's Smile.[1][27]

The next day, Jin Guangyao attempts to enter the Cloud Recesses and discovers that his Jade Token is no longer effective. Lan Xichen allows Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian to secretly observe their conversation in Hanshi.[27]

Jin Guangyao offers to return the token, but Lan Xichen refuses, claiming he's already given it away. After asking the cultivators to search Cloud Haven in the coming days, Jin Guangyao assures Lan Xichen that he doesn't blame Lan Wangji. In fact, although many witnessed Lan Wangji fleeing Golden Carp Tower with Wei Wuxian, as the head cultivator, Jin Guangyao will not allow rumors to spread that will harm Lan Wangji's reputation.

Discussion conference at the Golden Carp Tower

While Lan Xichen accompanies Jin Guangyao to console Nie Huaisang over another problem that arose in Qinghe, Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian conduct an investigation into Jin Guangyao.[25]

Lan Wangji is alarmed by the news that they have found Nie Mingjue's head in Jin Guangyao's secret treasury. He asks Jin Guangyao to show them the room, and he agrees.[21]

After Qin Su stabs himself with the Assassin's Dagger, Lan Xichen quickly retrieves the medicine, but to no avail. When Jin Guangyao tearfully demands to know what's being hidden from him, Lan Xichen explains to everyone present that Nie Mingjue's body was cut into pieces and that Mo Xuanyu and Lan Wangji are searching for the culprit.[21]

Unfortunately, Jin Guangyao then directs Hengsheng at Wei Wuxian, who unsheaths Suibian and reveals himself as the Yiling Patriarch. Lan Wangji escapes with Wei Wuxian, and Jin Guangyao promises Lan Xichen that he will explain everything.

Night Hunting in Tangzhou

Having found all of the Demonic Left Arm's body parts except the head, Lan Wangji takes it to Lan Xichen during a night hunt in Tanzhou, accompanied by Wei Wuxian, Lan Xizhui, and Lan Jingyi.[24]

However, the Fierce Corpse's wrathful energy is so powerful that the body manages to escape the Qiankun sacks it was carried in and reassemble. Lan Wangji and Lan Xichen return from their private conversation to find the body searching for its head. They subdue it with the help of Wangji and Liben, respectively.[24]

Lan Xichen notices that the hand movements resemble those of Nie Mingjue when he wields his saber, and realizes with horror that the body belongs to his older sworn brother. However, he refuses to believe that Jin Guangyao divided his body and killed him, pointing out that he regularly hunts at night with Jin Guangyao and has never seen signs of him using a transportation talisman, like the gravedigger Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian encountered. He proposes discussing the matter at the upcoming discussion conference, which is less than a month away.

Wei Wuxian's return

Lan Wangji meets Wei Wuxian shortly after his resurrection in Mo Xuanyu's body. Lan Wangji brought Wei Wuxian to the Cloud Recesses while he went to plan the upcoming Discussion Conference with Jin Guangyao. Before leaving, Lan Wangji remarks that his brother is happy.

death is not mingjue

Lan Wangji begins playing the Cleansing Tone to calm Nie Mingjue's sword spirit. Since he is busy restoring the Cloud Recesses with Jin Guangyao's help, he also teaches this song to Jin Guangyao so that he can also assist Nie Mingjue.[13][20]

Many years later, observing these events through empathy, Wei Wuxian suspects that Lan Xichen used the Cloud Recesses as an excuse because he still hoped for a reconciliation between Jin Guangyao and Nie Mingjue.[13]

However, while Lan Xichen is helping Jin Guangyao with his latest proposal regarding the watchtowers, Nie Mingjue bursts into Golden Carp Tower. Enraged that Xue Yang's death sentence was commuted, he insists on speaking with Jin Guangyao alone.[13]

Lan Xichen intervenes after Nie Mingjue pushes Jin Guangyao down the stairs and calls him the son of a prostitute. Although Nie Mingjue insists that everyone will be safer if Jin Guangyao dies, Lan Xichen defends his younger sworn brother. He explains to Nie Mingjue that Jin Guangyao is currently in a difficult situation, as Jin Guangshan rejects all his proposals and his stepmother bullies him. Lan Xichen believes that, given time, Jin Guangyao will make the right choice.[13]

However, during a martial arts conference in the Impure Realm, Jin Guangyao admits that he is afraid that Nie Mingjue will kill him and expresses displeasure at his elder brother for calling him the son of a prostitute. Nie Mingjue, unfortunately, overhears and kicks down the door.[21]

Lan Xichen uses Shuoyue to protect Jin Guangyao and shouts at him to flee. Although Nie Mingjue pursues him, he soon dies from qi deflection.[21]

After this, Lan Xichen and Jin Guangyao use their influence to keep Nie Huaisang as the head of the Qinghe Nie clan.

the fall of Wei Wuxian

The first siege of the mounds

Although he does not oppose the siege,[17] Lan Qiren notably leads the Gusu Lan clan during the battle in which Wei Wuxian dies.[18] Lan Xichen's whereabouts, whether he participates in the battle or stays behind to care for Lan Wangji, are not mentioned in the novel.

Upon hearing this news, Lan Wangji, despite his grave injuries, drags himself to the Mounds of Mounds to take one last look at them. Returning to the Cloud Recesses with Wen Yuan, Lan Wangji drinks the Emperor's Smile for the first time. Lan Xichen tries to calm his drunken brother by helping him search for the flute, but his efforts are in vain; Lan Wangji is actually looking for Wei Wuxian, the man who plays the flute.

The Fall of Wei Wuxiang

Remnants of the Qishan Wen Clan

After witnessing Wei Wuxian's outburst of anger towards Jin Zixun for enslaving the remnants of the Qishan Wen Clan, Lan Xichen is alarmed to realize that Wei Wuxian's heart has changed.[14]

When news broke that Wei Wuxian had killed several guards on the Qiongqi Road to free the remnants of the Qishan Wen Clan, Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji both attended an emergency meeting at the Golden Carp Tower. Although Lan Xichen reminded those present that Wen Qing and her family were innocent of any crimes, Nie Mingjue quickly retorted that her silence made her an accomplice. Knowing Nie Mingjue's hatred for the Qishan Wen Clan, Lan Xichen did not argue with him.[15]

After Luo Qingyang angrily leaves due to sexist remarks about her clan and Lan Wangji follows her, Lan Xichen calls everyone to order in an attempt to stop their quarrel.[15]

Bloody Massacre in Night City

Lan Wangji attends the meeting in the Endless City. He witnesses Wei Wuxian's appearance and battles the Fierce Corpses summoned by the Yin Tiger after Jiang Yanli's death.[16]

After this, Lan Xichen can barely stand on his feet. He then sees Lan Wangji staggering towards Wei Wuxian and leading him away on Bichen.[17]

Fearing that Lan Wangji will be executed, or at least have his reputation ruined for being Wei Wuxian's accomplice, Lan Xichen searches for Lan Qiren. Along with thirty-three elders who have always held Lan Wangji in high regard, they secretly search for him for two days. They find them in a cave, where Lan Wangji is transferring spiritual energy to Wei Wuxian, who merely tells him, "Fuck off." The expression on Lan Wangji's face leaves no doubt in Lan Xichen's mind and everyone else's: his brother is in love with Wei Wuxian.[17]

Lan Wangji then wounds thirty-three elders with the Bichen Sword to escape with Wei Wuxian. When he returns to the Cloud Recesses, he is struck thirty-three times with the whip of discipline. Lan Xichen takes care of him for several years.

vow of brotherhood

Lan Xichen had always hoped that Jin Guangyao and Nie Mingjue would reconcile, and eventually convinced Nie Mingjue to swear an oath of brotherhood with the three of them around the end of the war.

past

Lanya Front

Lan Xichen arrives to assist Lan Yan a few days after Meng Yao's escape. He is surprised to hear Nie Mingjue report that Meng Yao killed the cruel commander. Lan Xichen believes this may have been a misunderstanding, adding that it is difficult to determine the culprit during wartime.[10]

Letters of Nie Mingjue

Lan Xichen begins receiving letters from a spy in Night City, containing vital information. He passes the letters on to Nie Mingjue, who wins victory after victory. After several coincidences, Lan Xichen finally realizes the letters are from Meng Yao.[13]

After Nie Mingjue is captured in Yangquan, Lan Xichen receives a letter requesting him to immediately arrive at the City of No Night. By the time he arrives, Meng Yao has killed Wen Ruohan and escaped with the gravely wounded Nie Mingjue. However, Nie Mingjue, enraged that Meng Yao killed the cultivators captured with him, attempts to kill Meng Yao with Basia.[13]

Lan Xichen defends Meng Yao, reminding Nie Mingjue that Meng Yao had to commit terrible acts to maintain his cover. Ultimately, Nie Mingjue refuses to kill him.

past

At the start of the Sunshot Campaign, Lan Xichen joins Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng to reclaim the swords that were taken from them during their training at the Qishan Wen Clan.[12]

After the fighting in Gusu subsides, Lan Xichen leaves Lan Qiren to defend the region and goes to aid others. He saves countless lives, helps evade danger, and reclaims lost territory. His name alone is enough to inspire hope in the struggling cultivators.[10] Hejiang Front

Lan Xichen often stops in Hejiang to rest after escorting cultivators between missions. There, he learns that Meng Yao has become Nie Mingjue's right-hand man. Noticing that the other cultivators are refusing to drink the tea Meng Yao has brought, Lan Xichen meaningfully thanks Meng Yao and takes a sip before speaking to Nie Mingjue.[10]

When Lan Xichen speaks with Meng Yao alone, he asks if Meng Yao's desire for a place in his father's clan has changed. Although Meng Yao is reluctant to leave Nie Mingjue, he admits that his desire remains the same, and Lan Xichen offers to speak with Nie Mingjue instead.[10]

Nie Mingjue then enters and announces that he will write a letter the next day. When he asks how Lan Xichen and Meng Yao know each other, Lan Xichen refuses to answer, cryptically stating that it would be a "lifelong shame." After Nie Mingjue asks Lan Xichen to hand over Nie Huaisang's saber to his younger brother in Gusu, the three men converse at length.[10]

The next day, Lan Xichen goes to the front in Jiangling to act as a mediator between Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian.

Blazing Cloud Depths (past)

Lan Xichen was not yet twenty when Wen Xiu came to the Cloud Recesses to accuse Qingheng-jun of wrongdoing. He ordered their residence burned down so that it could be "reborn in the light of fire," and broke Lan Wangji's leg when he refused. Lan Xichen eventually escaped to save the most valuable scrolls from their library,[7] and his father was so severely injured that he briefly fell into a coma[8] and died.[9]

Lan Xichen is eventually rescued by Jin Guangyao and then Meng Yao, under circumstances he humorously calls "a lifelong shame."[10] According to the Weibo post, Lan Xichen, while in hiding, struggles to learn how to wash clothes, but his incredible strength causes him to accidentally tear the fabric. Meng Yao takes over the washing, fearing that someone else might recognize the patterns in the clouds and endanger Lan Xichen.

Cloud Depths Training (past)

Because Lan Xichen is a few years older than his brother, he isn't in the same class as Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng, Nie Huaisang, and the others. However, upon meeting Wei Wuxian, Lan Xichen senses that his brother wants to invite him to investigate the water spirits' presence in Caiyi City with them, and he immediately extends the invitation.[2]

Once they explore the nearby Biling Lake, it becomes clear that the ghosts originate from the Water Abyss, a particularly difficult creature to subdue. Lan Xichen quickly realizes that the Qishan Wen Clan has driven their Water Abyss into Gusu instead of purifying it.[3]

Lan Xichen later encounters Wei Wuxian after receiving a beating from Lan Wangji. Concerned about the severity of Wei Wuxian's injuries, Lan Xichen informs him that he will heal faster if he uses the cold springs of the Cloud Recesses.[4]

According to Lan Wangji's dream, he appears to have sought out Lan Xichen after Wei Wuxian gave him two rabbits. Lan Wangji claims he promised to take care of them, and Lan Xichen warns his brother not to let them affect his studies and not to tell Lan Qiren that Wei Wuxian gave them to him.[5] Lan Xichen later expresses amusement when the rabbits search for Lan Wangji while he and his brothers are performing handstands together, and compliments Lan Wangji on their names.[6]

Lan Xichen always practices Cleansing in his mother's house.[6]

youth

Lan Xichen was taken from his mother immediately after birth. Because his father, Qingheng-Jun, lived in seclusion, he was raised by his uncle, Lan Qiren.[1]

Lan Qiren was a strict mentor to Lan Xichen and his younger brother Lan Wangji, as he was determined that his nephews would not repeat their father's mistakes.[1]

Every month, they eagerly awaited the day they would be allowed to see their mother. Unfortunately, Lan Xichen was not yet nine years old when Lan Qiren informed them that there was no longer any need to visit her: their mother had died.

interesting facts

Lan Xichen doesn't know how to wash his clothes. They always get torn. As part of the Lan family's genetic makeup, Lan Xichen also gets drunk from just one cup of wine. According to the author, when Lan Xichen gets drunk, he becomes so excited that every sentence he speaks ends with three exclamation points.

personality

Lan Xichen has a kind and gentle personality. He tends to wear a smile on his face and is polite to everyone he meets. Unlike many in his cultivation society, Lan Xichen treats everyone with equal courtesy, regardless of status. For example, he happily accepts tea offered by Jin Guangyao, when others refuse anything from the son of a prostitute.

Lan Xichen, who is not prone to anger, only loses his temper when the situation involves someone he loves, such as when he becomes angry at the thought of Wei Wuxian deliberately ridiculing Lan Wangji's feelings.

He also tends to believe the best in others, to the point of admitting he doesn't want to know why his mother killed someone, and despite losing trust in his younger sworn brother, insists on listening to Jin Guangyao's arguments. Overall, he seems to believe that most people act with good intentions, despite their actions.

appearance

Tall and slender, Lan Xichen bears a strong resemblance to his younger brother. There are two major differences between them: first, Lan Xichen's eyes are softer and darker than Lan Wangji's, and second, Lan Xichen's face is usually smiling, while Lan Wangji remains stoic. As a result, Lan Xichen was voted the most handsome young master in the cultivation world, with Lan Wangji taking second place.

He wears the white robes and hairband of the Gusu Lan Sect, and has Lebing and Shuoyue hanging from his waist.
