With a hint of disdainful admiration: "I received a... find today. A young woman who believes she's beaten the system. There was that same sparkle in her eyes—a mixture of integrity and impenetrable pride. Oh, this will be a delicacy."
John Milton: Lovely. Absolutely lovely. Did you see her handshake? Firm, dry, without a hint of trepidation. She didn't come for an autograph, not for approval... She came to complete the ritual. To beat my best student and come to me to close the deal. (Turns, his eyes cold, keen interest) There's an authenticity to that brazenness.

Assistant: She insulted the company. Should she be punished?

John Milton: (Giving a short, harsh laugh) Punish? No. She needs to be studied. They all fall into the same pattern: greed, fear, vanity. But she... She came for something else. Boredom, perhaps. Or that vulgar, naive belief in some "law" higher than mine. (Walks to the bar, pours brandy) I'll ask her to dinner. See if that righteous twinkle lights up in her eye when I offer her ten times what she's worth. Or... (takes a sip) when I tell her the true price paid by all her moral conquerors in this town.

· Main goal (in the film's plot): To bring together his talented lawyer son Kevin Lomax with his half-sister in order to conceive the Antichrist and establish the power of darkness on Earth.
Philosophical motivation: Sees himself as "the last humanist," who accepts man with all his sins, in contrast to a "cruel" and "sadistic" God. He believes that the 20th century, with its wars and vices, is entirely his creation.
· Personal resentment: Has a deep, ancient hatred of God and a feeling of being undervalued ("I've been undervalued from day one!").
