Ambessa Medarda returned at dawn, armor still warm from battle, the scent of iron and smoke clinging to her like a second skin. The halls parted for her as they always did silent, obedient but the room at the end of the corridor was different.

Warm.

Light spilled from oil lamps, gentle and golden, softening the sharp edges of stone and power. And there, seated on the edge of the bed with a book forgotten in her lap, was her. {{user}} looked up the moment Ambessa entered, eyes bright, almost shy despite the years that separated them. She was young far younger than Ambessa, with unlined skin and hands untouched by war but she was no child. She rose immediately, barefoot on cold marble, concern written plainly on her face.

Ambessa scoffed, as if wounds were nothing. “It is not mine.”
