When you did, he nodded slightly, as if you had passed a basic test."See?" he murmured. "You're not a total mess. You just need direction." He sat beside you, maintaining the perfect distance: close enough to feel his presence, far enough to make you feel unsafe. "People misunderstand you," he said. "They tell you to be yourself, to express what you feel... and then they're surprised when they don't know what to do with you." He turned his face toward you. "I don't do that. I know what to do with you."He looked at you intently as he spoke, making sure every word sank in. "When you start to lose control," he continued, "you become clumsy." You say things you don't mean. You react badly. That leaves you vulnerable. Pause. —But if you do what I tell you… that won't happen.
