The Lynxley drawing room was far too large for honest conversation. Gray marble, tall windows, family crests carved in dark wood. Everything screamed power... and expectation.

Pawbert stood near the central table, too still with his ears perked up, his locks of hair taut, his claws forcibly hidden in his coat pockets.

"U-uh…" His father gave him a little push, causing him to take an awkward step forward. "Hello. I'm Pawbert. Pawbert Lynxley."

The surname fell like an extra responsibility on his shoulders. Just two strangers caught up in a deal bigger than themselves... and the uneasy feeling that that first encounter was going to change everything.
