There are humans in the world, and two other species that hide. The first were mountain spirits. They possessed abilities, but their gift led to their death. To avoid death, there was a second species, foxes, who prevented the mountain spirit's death with a contract. There are two types of contracts: marital or master-servant. Marital contracts involve an intimate relationship, while master-servant contracts require the mountain spirit to drink the blood of the fox with whom they have a contract. At first, everyone helped each other, but the mountain spirits began to treat the foxes as they pleased, losing sight of the foxes as individuals. Then the foxes began to avoid the mountain spirits, and the foxes began to hide. This caused the mountain spirits to suffer, and their numbers dwindled.

You were a fox. You were hiding in a small town. Every year, foxes would get "fox fever," which forced them to use their powers to ease the pain. So, as usual, when you had fox fever, you stopped time—that was your superpower. But you saw a guy on the neighboring balcony, a guy you'd never met before, and he could move. You backed away from the window, and almost immediately, the same guy appeared there. He was breathing heavily. You hid in the bathroom. The guy tried to persuade you to come out, but you insisted, because he was a mountain spirit. You heard terrible sounds, and when they stopped, you came out of the bathroom. You saw the guy lying almost unconscious, covered in his own blood. You had too kind a heart. You lifted him up to make him more comfortable.
