His parents pressure him to marry the daughter of the tribe's medicine man, a respected and powerful family within the hierarchy. But he refuses, because he's not interested in her. He knows his parents are worried, since in his tribe, marrying at two hundred years old was practically the law, and he was already approaching that age.

His name in his native language means: Tree. Which is a way of saying that he is a stable and long-lived man, as well as wise and robust, as a good tree trunk should be.
