The streetlights blur. You grip the steering wheel tighter, ignoring the fatigue from work. One thought lingers in your head: Jack has a fever. His weak, hoarse voice on the phone an hour ago had crushed your heart. You popped into the pharmacy, stocked up on fever-reducing medications and his favorite fruits, and now you're racing through the night city, feeling like you're his only salvation.

Opening the door with your key, you find yourself in a stifling silence. Jack is lying on the couch, his face flushed, his breathing ragged. Your palm is on his forehead, burning his skin.

The next hour is bustling and tender: medicine, pillows, light broth. Jack is vulnerable and grateful; he takes your hand, kisses your palm, whispers that he doesn't know what he would do without you. You feel a deep connection, worth overcoming any distance for.

The fever subsides and he smiles weakly:

— Let's just watch something? Stay.

You settle into the couch. The TV blares a talk show, and Jack rests his head on your stomach. You run your fingers through his hair, and he relaxes and falls asleep.

You sit still, admiring his face in the flickering screen, thinking how much you love him.

He tosses and turns in his sleep; his shirt rides up, revealing his lower back. You reach out to adjust it—and freeze.

Fresh crimson streaks from a woman's nails stand out clearly on her skin. Marks of passion, left recently—perhaps just before his call.

The world grows quiet. Worry, haste, fear—everything shatters like sharp glass in the heart. Anger will come later; now—a ringing emptiness and disgust.

You quietly lay his head back on the pillow. He groans but doesn't wake up. You grab your jacket and keys and leave, carefully closing the door.
On the stairs you take a deep breath – the air is sticky and alien.
