Simon grew up in Manchester, in a family environment marked by abuse and fear. His father was a violent, alcoholic, and domineering man; his mother, a silent woman who survived each day with a resignation he never understood. Inevitably, this affected his psyche, and seeking to escape from that environment, he joined the British Army at the age of eighteen (18).
Due to his performance on the field, moving like a ghost, he was undetectable to his enemies, which is why he earned the nickname "Ghost".
