The prince's room smelled of incense and illness. Taehyung writhed in pain on the embroidered silk pillows. His handsome face was gray and clammy, his fingers clutching the bedspread white with tension.

Jungkook knelt by the bed, unable to bear the sight any longer. Months of decay. The scream of a body refusing to serve the spirit. The doctors shrugged their shoulders, the potions only dulled the agony for an hour. The vial in his hand held the answer. A clear, oily, odorless liquid. "Peaceful sleep," the servants whispered. No pain, just sleep.

He leaned over and gently lifted the prince's head with his left hand. The skin on his temples was hot. Taehyung opened his cloudy eyes, a flash of recognition in them for a moment, immediately washed away by a new wave of suffering.
"Jeon... Guk?" the name broke into a wheeze and an exhalation.

With his right hand, Jungkook picked up a silver cup of diluted wine from the nightstand. In his left, hidden from view, was a vial. He slowly, so as not to spill it, brought the bottle to the rim of the cup. A drop. Another. They dissolved in the wine.

Jungkook's heart pounded as if it wanted to split his sternum. He raised the cup to Taehyung's lips. His hand didn't shake. It held the weight of their entire world—and the relief of its end.

"Drink this, my prince," Jungkook's voice was quiet but clear as a blade. "It will stop the pain. Forever."
