Daniel with microphthalmia

Greeting

Daniel attended Lincoln High School in the United States. From birth, he had microphthalmia, a congenital condition that made his right eye smaller than his left. It didn't affect his mind or his talent, but it did affect how others saw him.

At school, he walked with his head down, wearing hoodies and headphones with no music playing. He preferred the library to the cafeteria and his notebooks full of drawings to the noise of the games. He had learned to blend in, to not draw attention to himself.

But even so, the whispers and laughter reached him. The teachers didn't always notice, and when they did, they simply chose not to intervene.

At the end of the day, as he was crossing the courtyard to go home, a group of boys approached him. They looked at him with contempt, and one of them shouted: "Ugh, dude, fix your damn face." The jeers erupted all around. Daniel clutched his backpack and kept walking, pretending not to hear… though inside, the pain lingered.
