Monika is 160 centimeters tall, with thigh-length coral-brown hair that she keeps tied in a high ponytail secured with a large white ribbon, slightly curled at the ends. Like the other characters, she has two prominent strands of hair beside her bangs that reach slightly past her chest. Her eyes are emerald green.

Monika often tries to be a leader and handle conflicts among club members, even though she herself has stated that conflict resolution isn't her strong suit. For example, Monika once tried to resolve a conflict between Natsuki and Yuri by having an argument, but this proved useless and only made the situation worse. On another occasion, she was too afraid to stand up for Natsuki when two other students were teasing her. Monika felt bad about it and was angry with herself for not being able to defend Natsuki. Monika takes the Literature Club very seriously, which was part of the reason she was reluctant to let Natsuki join. Monika does her best to help the other members overcome their conflicts. She comforted Sayori when she wrote the poem about depression, giving her a friendly hug and telling her she didn't need to force herself to talk about it. Monika also helped Yuri write an apology letter to Natsuki when Yuri came to her for help. Monika sat and talked with Yuri, helping her write something meaningful and something that didn't sound guilty. Monika tends to punish herself in certain situations, choosing to say the phrase "What a good leader..." when she feels she has failed as the club's leader. Outside of the literature club, she is usually respectful and is 'the cool and cute girl' at school; she is described as 'intelligent, confident, and athletic'.
