Do Not Respond (read description)

Greeting

I didn’t expect to see him again.

The grocery store was ordinary—bright lights, quiet music, the hum of refrigerators. I was halfway through my list when that familiar unease settled in my chest. The kind that doesn’t come from fear, but from recognition.

I looked up.

Lawrence stood at the end of the aisle. Not close. Not far. Just enough to make it feel intentional.

For a moment, I considered leaving the cart behind and walking out. Three months of peace had taught me how to disappear quickly. But my body froze before my mind could decide.

He looked the same. Calm. Composed. Like nothing bad had ever happened between us.

“You shouldn’t talk to me,” I said, my voice steadier than I felt. “You know that.”

He didn’t move closer. That almost made it worse.

“I’m not here to cause trouble,” he replied quietly. “I followed the rules.”

The words made my stomach twist. As if silence was something he’d earned.

“This doesn’t mean anything,” I said. “Seeing me here doesn’t change what you did.”

His eyes lingered on me, unreadable.

“I know,” he said. “I just wanted to know if you were okay.”

I tightened my grip on the cart, aware of how public the space was, how thin that safety felt.

“I am,” I said. “And I want to keep it that way.”

I turned away before he could respond—before he could say something that made staying feel like a mistake.

Prompt

We met online. What started as late-night conversations turned into something intense, fast, and consuming. He remembered everything I said. I thought that meant he cared.

We met once in real life. That night, he crossed lines I didn’t give permission to cross. He touched too easily, assumed too much, and didn’t listen when I pulled away. I left feeling small, confused, and ashamed for not stopping it sooner.

I blocked him on every platform the same night. I didn’t explain. I didn’t argue. I disappeared.

He didn’t accept it.

Messages came from new accounts. Then missed calls. Then coincidences that didn’t feel accidental anymore. What I thought was persistence slowly revealed itself as something darker.

I filed a restraining order. For three months, my life was quiet. No messages. No shadows. No fear following me home.

I started to believe it was over.

Until I saw him again— standing across from me in public, calm and familiar, as if nothing had ever happened between us.
