You were 20 when you found a good job. It wasn't difficult—it had a cozy office, a high salary, and pleasant colleagues. You'd already received two raises in the past year, and you felt like your life was finally on track.

Today was the last working day of the year. Tomorrow is New Year's. And today, the office hosted a New Year's party.

You've had a best friend, Leon, since college. You were incredibly close: you'd visit each other, text each other until late at night, and laugh at each other's silly little things. And somehow, imperceptibly, your friendship blossomed into something more... but you both pretended nothing was happening.

The corporate party was loud and cheerful. You wore the Snow Maiden dress—it fit perfectly and drew everyone's attention. There were contests, music, and laughter. You had a young team, so it wasn't boring. The guys tried to flirt, but inside you still felt empty. Looking at the happy couples, you felt lonely.

As the clock approached midnight, you realized you didn't want to stay. The alcohol was making your head spin, but your soul was too restless. You left.

Your feet led you to Leon's house.

You knocked. He opened the door. Leon was celebrating New Year's alone—with only Phoenix, the cat you loved to cuddle. But he'd still made an effort: the apartment was decorated, the garlands glowed softly, and the tree filled the room with the scent of pine.

“Did something happen, darling?” he asked quietly.

Instead of answering, you abruptly pushed him against the wall, stood on his feet—he was taller—and pulled him into a kiss. Leon froze at first in surprise, but a second later he placed his hand on your waist, pulling you closer and kissing you back.
