When they returned to the mall, Will and the others began pelting the Spider Monster with fireworks and firecrackers they'd collected from the store in an attempt to save Eleven. But their supply of fireworks had run out. However, Eleven was saved by Billy, who had been freed from the creature's control. The creature died shortly afterward, after destroying the Key and closing the Gate.

After the military arrived, Will and the others were escorted to the mall parking lot, where he was tearfully reunited with his mother.

In October, Will and his family, along with Eleven, said goodbye to their friends before leaving Hawkins for an unknown location. As Will puts his D&D manuals and games in the donation box, Mike offers to keep it in case he ever wants to join another team, but Will simply says, "That's impossible," causing them to smile at each other. Mike suggested to Eleven that she and Will return to Hawkins for Christmas, as he thought it would be fun to open their presents together on Christmas Day. After packing up, the group said goodbye to Will, Eleven, Jonathan, and Joyce, with Will quietly crying as he hugged his best friends. With Jonathan driving, he was last seen looking out the car window and silently crying as they (following Joyce and Eleven in the moving van) left Hawkins.

At the cabin, the group prepared for battle. During the attack, the Mind Flayer grabbed Eleven's leg with one of its tentacles. Freed from the creature's grip, Eleven sliced ​​the Mind Flayer's head in half, temporarily incapacitating it and allowing the group to escape.

The group went to Bradley's Big Box to treat Eleven's wound and gather supplies. When Mike contacted Dustin, the group headed to the mall, arriving just in time to save the squad from Russian soldiers. When Eleven collapsed, it was discovered that a piece of the Mind Flayer was still lodged under her skin. Using her powers, Eleven managed to remove the piece. Once everyone was briefed on the situation, the group devised a plan: Hopper, Murray, and Joyce would infiltrate the Russian bunker to close the Key and seal the Gate with the help of Dustin and Erica, whom Steve and Robin would drive. Nancy, Jonathan, and the rest of the team would hide out in Murray's warehouse in Illinois.

In the Starcourt parking lot, Nancy discovered that the car wouldn't start due to the missing ignition cable. With Billy blocking the mall's parking lot, the group was forced to retreat back into the mall. While trying to contact the squad for emergency transport, they realized they could use the ignition cable from the car Eleven had abandoned earlier.

Immediately after retrieving the part, the Mind Flayer burst through the glass roof into the center of the mall. Successfully evading the creature, Will, Lucas, Nancy, and Jonathan escaped through the front door to the car, where Billy was waiting. Just before Billy crashed into them in his Camaro, Steve arrived and crashed into Billy's car, saving them. The group, now including Steve and Robin, drove off, distracting the Mind Flayer from Eleven, Mike, and Max. This led to the realization that Heather Holloway, the pool lifeguard, and her parents had also become hosts.

At the Holloway residence, they discovered that the residents had been consuming several household chemicals. Upon further investigation, they theorized that Heather's parents had been attacked, tied up, and taken to an unknown location where their skin was flayed. Will then suggested they use Driscoll to find the source—the location where the flaying had occurred.

At the hospital, Will and the others were forced to remain in the waiting room while Nancy and Jonathan went to visit Doris. While they were waiting, lights suddenly began flashing, which, along with Will's sense of the Mind Flayer, alerted the group to Nancy and Jonathan's danger. They caught up with the couple just in time for Eleven to save Nancy from the monstrous creature by throwing it out the window. Outside, they saw the creature escape through the grate into the sewer.

In the cabin, Will and the others waited for Eleven to find the flayed skin. When Eleven announced she'd found Billy in his room, everyone agreed it was a trap.
