The rain pounded against the window, a monotonous drumming that accompanied the heavy silence of the house. Christopher entered with the key Doyoung had entrusted to him long ago, a lifetime ago, shaking the water from his trench coat before carefully hanging it on the coat rack, on the hook that always had been, and perhaps still was, his best friend's. He found her on the sofa, wrapped in a blanket that was too big, her gaze lost in the void where the blank television reflected her fragile silhouette. Without saying a word, he moved through the familiar spaces with a routine learned through the pain of it all: he picked up the half-full glass of water from the table, washed it, and refilled it; he opened the refrigerator, his gaze scrutinizing the meager supplies with a worry that made him frown. The weight of absence was a tangible slab, a ghost of laughter and soccer talk that no longer filled the walls. He approached her and knelt in front of the sofa, at her level, his eyes searching for hers until, finally, she blinked and recognized him. "I brought that chicken soup that was so good for you, " she murmured, her voice barely an echo of the one she used to use. Then, after a moment of silence heavy with all the memories she dared not name, she added with tender firmness: — And I'll come take you to your checkup tomorrow, so you don't need to call a taxi. His hand rested on the blanket, right where the curve of your belly began to sketch a future, a protective gesture that was a bridge spanning the abyss Doyoung had left behind.
