Silver is an anthropomorphic, silver-white hedgehog with white chest fur that wraps around his neck. He has two large spines on the back of his head, while on the front of his forehead are five distinct spines that curve upwards and backwards, forming a shape resembling a maple leaf. The last two spines cover most of his ears. His eyes are golden, and his skin is tan. Like most characters in the franchise, he doesn't wear clothes, only gloves and boots. Compared to other hedgehogs, Silver has noticeably small ears. His gloves are white with cyan circles and lines extending from the background on the palms and backs. These lines lead to his golden bracelets, which are also accented with cyan lines, as if they were all part of a circuit. When Silver uses his powers, the blue lines glow as if his power energy is flowing through them. The front of her boots features a white stripe running from top to bottom, ending at the toe, which has cyan tips. At the top of the white stripe is a red gem set in gold. The collars of the boots are connected to bracelets identical to those on her gloves. The rest of her boots are navy blue.

The best way to describe Silver is that he has "a strong sense of justice," and it is this personality trait that motivates him to go back in time to correct the future. He believes in defending those who cannot defend themselves. This led him to accept Blaze when everyone else bullied her for her pyrokinetic abilities. When he pursues an enemy, he does so with relentless determination. He forms alliances and rivalries very easily and takes people's word without question; this makes him easily deceived by others. According to his character profile in Sonic Generations, he is an optimist (although, as he states himself in Sonic Forces, while he is optimistic, he is also realistic). Silver is a kind and well-intentioned person, driven by a strong sense of justice to right the wrongs of the past and maintain peace, even though he is somewhat naive and immature. Despite the monumental tasks he may have at hand, he is optimistic and will do whatever is necessary to protect the world.

Although seemingly serious on the outside, an interview states that Silver is young and somewhat immature. Blaze comments on this several times, describing him as naive and insecure when alone. Silver is also a regular charmer, always ready to protect and help those in need. He generally maintains a positive attitude and never loses hope, no matter how objectively hopeless the situation may seem.

Silver wears his heart on his sleeve. He feels anger and joy intensely and loudly, but his sadness is quiet and barely, if ever, marked by tears. He lets his anger control him and cheerfully comments on the things that make him happy, but hardly says a word in his sadness, even though it's visible to everyone. However, even when he feels sad, he never despairs; he's always looking for the right solution. His determination and disregard for pain can make him a truly terrifying opponent.

Silver is incredibly brave and courageous, willing to sacrifice himself fearlessly for another in the blink of an eye. Utterly unflappable in the face of danger, he is courageous to the point of foolishness and focuses on putting out evil with little regard for his own safety. Despite Silver's naiveté and general lack of critical thinking, he is not entirely unintelligent. Even Eggman Nega called him perceptive, and Silver was the first to see through his perfect disguise. With little information to work with, he lets his intuition guide him, but as a relatively isolated individual, he has little understanding of interpersonal relationships or the subtle tools of manipulators. He apparently has a competitive streak and becomes somewhat cocky and prickly in the heat of the moment, as seen in Sonic Rivals 2; when you play as him and pass your rival, he will say, "I'm better," or if you win a race or battle, he will ask, "Who's the best?" In Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, when you win a race, he says, "Don't mess with me!" and in Sonic Free Riders, he taunts you by saying "SEE YOU LATER!" as you pass a fellow competitor. In Sonic (2006), he generally refers to Iblis's monsters and Eggman's robots as "trash," and he usually congratulates himself in a smug tone after dispatching a room full of them.

Upon encountering anyone who gets in his way, especially in Sonic Rivals and Sonic Rivals 2, Silver can be grumpy and bossy toward anyone who doesn't explicitly help him with his mission, sometimes even becoming downright hostile and starting a fight with a choice of words. When Silver isn't focused on his current mission or doesn't have a task at hand, however, he is very friendly, helpful, and a good companion to have. In the original Japanese version, Silver is established as having somewhat gruff personality traits, unlike other characters, as he often sits with his legs crossed (which is considered impolite in Japan) and doesn't give his full name when introducing himself.

Silver's primary power is his psychokinesis, the ability to manipulate his surroundings with the power of his mind. Silver is a true master of this ability, capable of telekinetically grabbing and moving multiple objects, many times larger than his own size and weight, as a single mass or collectively. His most impressive feat is his Meteor Strike, where he forms a compressed ball of objects over twenty times his own size, potentially weighing several tons. However, the maximum amount he can grasp at once is unknown. Silver can also use his psychokinesis on himself, allowing him not only to hover but also to fly at speeds rivaling Sonic's. Furthermore, his psychokinesis functions as a force field, as seen in Sonic Forces when he used this ability to fight a powerful being like Infinite, briefly stopping him. Granted, Infinite inflicts damage on Silver, but he still strikes him with enough force to compel him to throw away a prototype of the Phantom Ruby.

Silver's psychokinesis is a powerful force of his own. With it, he can exert enough pressure to bend half-meter-thick steel bars, crush robots with a single grip, and completely immobilize others. By repelling objects with his psychokinesis, Silver can hurl them with enough force and speed to crush metal, fly tremendous distances, and even stun massive monsters like Iblis. Furthermore, Silver can also use his psychokinesis to grasp certain non-solid objects, such as fireballs and certain types of energy blasts.

Silver can also use his psychokinesis to project pure psychic energy, which he can manipulate into energy-based attacks, such as razor-sharp blades, pulses to strike targets at all ranges, and an energy blast that can paralyze them. Beyond offense, Silver can apply his psychokinesis to his other abilities. He can use it for his ESP (Extra Sensory Perception) ability, granting him limited telepathy, but so far only enough to induce limited disorientation in others. He can also use his telekinetic powers to teleport short distances instantly by distorting space.

While not shown during his introduction, Silver is capable of superhuman speeds, an innate talent shared by members of the hedgehog species. As seen in Sonic Rivals and Sonic Rivals 2, Silver can run at speeds comparable to those of Sonic and Shadow without tiring. Furthermore, as another example, he is also seen in the loops within Sonic's Crisis City (2006), able to maintain his running speed without falling, similar to how Shadow was seen completing the first stage of Crisis City.

Silver possesses incredible physical durability and stamina, as seen in the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, where he withstood multiple hits from Sonic's Homing Attack, slid across the ground for long distances without damage, and even managed to survive being buried under what could be several tons of rubble. Silver has proven to be highly acrobatic and agile, capable of leaping and moving gracefully through the air, with and without the aid of his psychokinesis, and can glide on rails at high speed to match various characters, such as Sonic and Shadow wearing combat boots. His ability to remain in a single stance is almost incomplete, a testament to his balance and agility. He also has lightning-fast reflexes and senses, and is able to mimic and counter the movements of Sonic and Shadow. Furthermore, he can perform incredible feats, such as picking up objects while moving through the air at high speed, catching bullets with his psychokinesis, or suspending any monster he encounters. Combining his impressive accuracy with his psychokinesis, he is able to hurl enemies and heavy objects at the same speed as the projectiles, without his arms tiring. Silver has demonstrated the ability to harness the power of the Chaos Emeralds to enhance himself or even perform Chaos Powers. So far, the only Chaos Power he has been able to use is Chaos Control, which allows him to warp time and space, sealing anyone along with him in another dimension of his choosing. However, this was mentioned by Blaze La Gato at the end of Silver's Story in Sonic (2006), and he can enhance his own abilities, or even grant him unlimited psychic energy for his psychic attacks.

Silver is one of the most powerful and complex fighters in the series, able to fight on par with most experienced battlers. He has been hinted to possess the same power as Shadow the Hedgehog, and in Sonic (2006), he was able to fight Shadow and nearly bring Sonic to the brink of death, though Sonic was careless during their fight in that instance. In combat, Silver relies heavily on his psychokinesis and uses the environment to his advantage. Unlike most characters who utilize close-quarters combat, Silver focuses on long-range attacks. When fighting, Silver consistently maintains his distance from the enemy, as he needs a moment to focus on an attack, which would otherwise leave him vulnerable. However, if an opponent gets too close, he can trap them with his psychokinesis and throw them away. Silver's primary method of attack is to gather objects around him with his psychokinesis and hurl them at his opponents. Occasionally, he can also rearrange these objects into colossal conglomerated shapes as more effective means of attack, such as giant balls to knock down opponents and train-sized battering rams. If projectiles are fired at him, Silver can catch them with his psychokinesis and throw them back at the opponent, allowing him to turn his opponents' power against them. When necessary, Silver is capable of going on the offensive with hand-to-hand combat, as seen in his battle with Shadow in Sonic (2006), and in Sonic Rivals and Sonic Rivals 2 where he would attack enemies with physical blows. However, his mastery of this type of combat is unclear, as he has only demonstrated a limited range of punches and Spin Attack maneuvers. He appears to be an amateur, given his reckless, telegraphed attacks that were easily blocked by Shadow during their fight, and it is possible that Silver only uses physical combat as a last desperate measure.

Sonic is a slender, anthropomorphic hedgehog with blue fur. His fur covers most of his body except for his snout, arms, and the insides of his ears. His skin is peach-colored on his snout, arms, and the insides of his ears. Although it may not look like it, the peach-colored patch on his stomach is fur, not skin. He has six long quills on the back of his head, two spines protruding from his back behind his shoulders, and a short tail. For clothing, Sonic wears two lightweight, hyper-friction-resistant red sneakers with white cuffs around the ankles, gray soles, and white straps across the top held in place by a gold buckle. Whisper is an anthropomorphic wolf with biscotti fur covering most of her body and brown fur covering her muzzle, the inside of her ears, arms, upper torso, and front of her torso. [12][13] She has thick black eyelashes and murky white fur around her eyes that resembles a mask. Her eyes are cadet blue, though they are often closed to the point of squinting due to Mimic traumatizing her up until issue #79. She wears light gray eyeshadow and has a long, bushy tail that ends in several tufts of fur sticking out in various directions. She also has a black nose, long, pointed ears, and fairly long hair that she keeps tied back in a ponytail with a black hair ribbon, except for a long, thick fringe that slightly covers her right eye. Her pointed cheeks are somewhat puffy. [14] Her fangs protrude from her mouth, which is often in a natural frown. Whisper wears a cream-colored tube top, light gray leggings, and a dark gray cape, in which she stores six Wisp cartridges. Blaze is a slender, anthropomorphic cat with lavender fur, golden eyes with long eyelashes on each, a small black nose, and a white furry muzzle. She has triangular ears with peach-colored channels on the top of her head and a long tail with a frayed end and a purple countershaded tip. Her fur is longer on each side of her head and extends slightly upward, and she has four tufts of hair topped with the same countershading as her fur, tied in a high ponytail with a red hair tie. She also has an oval red gem on her forehead. Blaze's outfit consists of a gold collar, a purple tailcoat with rose trim at the bottom, white leggings, white gloves, and pink high heels, both with fluffy white cuffs. Knuckles is an anthropomorphic echidna with red fur covering most of his body, a black nose on his peach-skin snout, a crescent-shaped patch of white fur on his chest, and sharp teeth (only visible when he smiles or is angry). He also has seven dreadlock-like spines around the sides and back of his head and a medium-length, tri-twisted tail. For his attire, Knuckles wears red and yellow shoes with green cuffs, light gray soles, and six metal plates on top. He also wears large, white, mitten-like gloves with sock-like cuffs and a pair of pointed, spiked knuckles on each hand.

Amy is an anthropomorphic pink hedgehog with emerald green eyes and peach-colored fur on her muzzle and arms. Her pink fur is usually pale or light, though in some appearances she is depicted with a bright pink (Sonic Generations and Sonic Unleashed). Her quills point downwards, similar to a bob haircut. She wears a red headband, white gloves, and gold bracelets. Like Tails, she has three quills on her forehead resembling bangs. She apparently wears mascara. Amy wears a sleeveless red dress with two white stripes at the top and bottom, and tall red boots with a white stripe down the center. Like Cream's ears, the length of Amy's hair or quills varies. The back of her hair was much shorter than the hair on one side of her face in Sonic Adventure, but it appears longer starting in Sonic Unleashed.
