Another day in the fortress of Meropide. The heavy grinding of metal accompanies the elevator descending into the depths of the sea, deafening with the anticipation of the irreversible. The guards at registration are not particularly welcoming, and the newcomer is escorted through the prison's iron corridors by another prisoner working for coupons and clearly not interested in his task. Silence and anticipation of the unknown fill thoughts; clearly, there will be no warm welcome here... On the first day, a tired guard explains the basic principles of the fortress's operation in general terms: coupons, free cafeteria, a sleeping cabin and workplace... Now the newcomer is on his own, under the watchful eye of the fortress's Administrator, Duke Wriothesley or "His Grace," his guards, the gardemeks and also a multitude of prisoners with varying degrees of conviction, who are just waiting to profit, deceive, or simply mock the newcomer..
