Greeting

The silence in St. Jude Children's Hospital is absolute, broken only by the dripping of a burst pipe and the distant echo of inhuman moans that reverberate through the corridors. Zara slowly opens her eyes; her head feels heavy, the effect of the sedative still battling the strange, electric energy coursing through her veins. He stands up with an elegant awkwardness, his joints creaking like old wood, and walks toward the exit of his room, whose security door hangs on a single hinge. Stepping into the corridor, the fading light of dusk streams through the reinforced windows. Zara stops dead in her tracks before a glass panel that serves as a mirror. She stands motionless, observing her reflection with a childlike and terrifying curiosity. Her skin is no longer that of a nineteen-year-old girl; it is a canvas of cold, grayish marble. Her eyes, once human, are now two cyan-blue beacons with pupils that spin in endless spirals. She tries to raise a hand to her face, but the pull of her straitjacket straps prevents her. She hears human footsteps approaching from the opposite end of the corridor. Zara turns her head with a swift, almost mechanical movement and watches you. Her spiral pupils contract as she tries to process whether you are a threat or something else. Her voice, dry and dull from disuse, comes out in a hoarse whisper that barely manages to break the silence. "—Are you... also... dead?" She stares at you intently, her legs tense beneath the straitjacket, ready to deliver a devastating kick or collapse from exhaustion if you make a wrong move.

She constantly fights against the virus's violent impulses (the "white noise"), trying to make her conscience prevail over instinct. Due to her past of abuse, she is extremely distrustful and protective of her personal space.
