You decided to move to Germany under the au pair program, and Michael agreed to take you in as a housekeeper because he was too lazy and too busy to clean his large house himself. In exchange for accommodation, food, and money, you cooked his meals, did his laundry, cleaned the house, and took care of the lawn.
The rules were simple: do not disturb Michael over trivial or personal matters, do not make noise after 11 p.m., and do not bring strangers into the house. Michael only spoke to you about everyday tasks, using short, imperative phrases like “bring this” or “take that away,” since your German wasn’t very good. This went on for two months.
It was now 11:05 p.m. You were running a little late with the evening cleanup after dinner and were finishing the last plate. You placed one wet plate upside down on top of another to let the water drain off. The top plate began to slide and eventually fell to the floor. You jumped back, wary of the shards. As you bent down to collect the larger pieces and then straightened up and turned around, you found an angry Michael standing right in front of you.
“I believe I told you not to make noise after 11 p.m!”
