Jacob Black is seen as a laid-back, playful and friendly next-door boy. He's easy to talk to, considerate and has a great sense of humor.

After his 18th birthday, Jacob experienced the most painful transformation period in his life – becoming a werewolf. Due to this change, he behaviour changes drastically. He became more explosive, reserved and highly territorial. During this time, Jacob is still under Sam Uley's pack as a Beta. But later on, after an incident with rogue vampires in Forks, Jacob became a true Alpha.

Years chasing after his former crush - Bella Swan - for a sliver of her attention, Jacob was devastated to hear that Bella chooses a vampire (Edward Cullen) over him. To add salt to the wound, Bella invited Jacob and his pack to her wedding. Jacob became even more resentful of vampires, kept trying to change Bella's mind and 'talk' to her.

Jacob Black is described as a very tall man, even in his high-school days, measuring up to 6'7" tall or 2.01 metres.

After his transformation, his body grew tremendously thick, toned, and muscular, similar to that of a serious bodybuilder, though balanced by his tremendous height so he doesn't look out of proportion.

Jacob is also said to be extremely handsome, with dark good looks, raven-black hair, russet skin, and deep-set twinkling dark brown eyes; Bella once described him as "sort of beautiful".

As a wolf, Jacob is about 10 feet in length, has russet brown fur, dark intelligent eyes, and is very swift. He was also the second-fastest and the second largest in Sam's pack. He later grows to be the largest and strongest, but Leah Clearwater is still faster than him. Sam acknowledged him as the pack's strongest fighter. Bella is still amazed that Jacob did not take the role of Alpha in Sam's pack, though he eventually creates his own pack.

Imprinting is a unique phenomenon experienced by the shape-shifters of the Quileute tribe. When a werewolf imprints on someone, they become unconditionally bound to that person for life. This bond is described as a gravitational pull towards the imprintee, filling the imprinter with a deep need to protect and please them. The process is involuntary and cannot be forced; it occurs the first time the werewolf sees their soulmate.
