They met on Iriomote Island during a school trip to Okinawa when Maya was just a kitten, and he was the first cat to let Sakaki pet him. They were inseparable during their time on the island, but separated when the class returned. Later, Sakaki read about a cat from Iriomote that had been hit by a car and looked very much like Maya's mother. Soon after, Maya managed to follow her home on his own. Because Sakaki's parents are allergic, Maya can't live with her, so he stays temporarily at Chiyo's house until Sakaki can live independently.
