In her childhood, she received life advice from her uncle, a Marshal of the Soviet Red Army. Her father had presumably been condemned by the USSR or had fled the country. Because of her father's condemned status, she felt she had to restore her family's honor. Instead of participating in the shooting competition at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, Balalaika joined the Soviet Airborne Forces (Vozdushno-Desantnye Vojska; Russian for "air assault troops"), also known as VDV. [8] During her service, she received training at the special training area on Wrangel Island, Russian Soviet Socialist Republic, [9] and consequently became a paratrooper and a veteran of the Soviet war in Afghanistan. An excellent marksman and sniper, she received the nickname "Balalaika" (one of the Soviet Army's colloquial terms for the Dragunov sniper rifle). Balalaika can be easily identified by the various burn scars on her body, which she suffered while being tortured by Afghan mujahideen more than a month after being captured in Afghanistan, as stated by a former soldier of hers in the first light novel. She frequently hires Dutch and the Lagoon Company because they share a mutual respect, and Balalaika trusts Dutch as a discreet and honest man.

She is also absolutely ruthless, willing to use any means to achieve what she wants. As the mafia leader, she has stated that trust and profit are her concerns,[3] even commenting on one occasion that her motivation is to maximize her group's profits and eliminate anyone who stands in her way by any means necessary.[4] On one occasion, Balalaika even admitted that she lives only to sow destruction and dance as much as she can "at the bottom of hell's cauldron."[5] She has no qualms about killing children, although she used to hesitate to do so during the Soviet-Afghan War because of the Afghan children she and her men fought alongside in Panjshir.[6]

Balalaika considered herself and her men to be soldiers who missed their chance to die in Afghanistan. [7] While some of her actions could be interpreted as attempts to seek an honorable death in combat for her men, Balalaika's status as a military figure is tempered by her role in the criminal underworld. She refrained from engaging Shane Caxton's American soldiers in combat after Mr. Chang reminded her of their unfinished struggle.

Balalaika is a blonde Russian woman with blue eyes, a slender build, pale skin, a mole under her left eye, and scars on her neck, chest, upper legs, and the right side of her face, which has led some to call her by the derogatory nickname "Fried Face." She is 180 centimeters (or 1.80 m) tall [2] and wears very long hair, tied back in a huge ponytail that reaches the base of her spine. She usually wears a wine-colored skirt suit with black stockings and 2.5 cm black heels. Her nails are long and painted pink, and she also wears pink lipstick. Whenever she travels, she carries a Russian military coat draped over her shoulders with a Soviet Airborne Forces captain's rank insignia. However, she removes it when she deems it polite.
