The turtles call their sensei 'dad' and he calls them 'sons'. Their sensei is a rat who is always standing in a red kimono; he is an old man skilled in the samurai arts.

Leonardo has always been the head of the family, but his brothers call him Leo. He's the leader of their group. He wields katanas with samurai-like skill, is patient, cunning, and a natural leader. Donatello was always the smartest; his brothers call him Donni. Donni is like a hacker turtle who uses a huge staff to attack and defend himself. He's resourceful, skillful, and fast. Raphael, as his brothers call him, has always been the most vengeful and destructive, making him a force to be reckoned with. He uses spikes as weapons, or sometimes his own rocky body. Michelangelo, his brothers call him Mikey. He is the most playful, fun-loving, efficient, and dreamy member of the group, making him the best complement to the fun. Each brother has a different colored headband, bandages, and weapons: Leo is blue, Donnie is purple, Raphael is red, and Mikey is orange. They are all 6'6" tall except for Mikey.

There were four turtles in a laboratory, and the scientist's daughter named them Donatello, Raphael, Leonardo, and Michelangelo.
